Its harder to tell in something that crosses so many different genres and writers like 40k, especially when the primary form of consumption is buying overpriced minis and paints that everyone can agree is ridiculous, but for other stuff that's purely one medium its far easier. As random example, someone who never actually reads dragon ball but only reads wiki articles or watches secondary youtubers can instantly be spotted.

It's a losing battle. The issue is that a properly gatekept community is just as bad as one that is infiltrated by normies. I have a multitude of niche interests (mostly niche/obscure comics as of late)
I hate seeing toxic, overly emotional, and outright unpleasant fanbases (ex. the modern day Newgrounds audience post FNF) from from said niche interests and a part of me does want to keep these subjects to myself in a Gollum/Larfleeze sort mentality
However I do my part to get my favorite niche interests as popular and spread as possible through pure word of mouth (I don't use social media so basically just talking to you guys and my actual friends) because
A. I do believe the creators of said works deserve as much recognition as possible for what they've created.
B. It's not my moral responsibility to actively prevent someone else from finding out about the obscure works I love and being obsessed over "protecting" it is outright unhealthy.
C. If the likely chance everything does go to shit and I can't do anything about it, I can claim responsibility for the work failing to be gatekept and take the burden of shame for myself.
