Its time to admit that Marvel has a serious feminism problem if even a Fantastic Four movie has to be about 2 all powerful girlbosses doing all the heavy lifting while all the male members are sidelined to weaklings and idiots who do nothing but simping to the said girlbosses and getting rescued or easily beaten up by them.

It's partly boredom with the old stories and the search for something different. Almost every MCU movie since 2016 or so has been trying to do something that is different from the classic superhero formula (like Civil War not ending with a hero vs. villain fight), even though some of them have been done so often that they now *are* the superhero formula.

Making Sue the most powerful member of the team is a reaction against the 1960s comics when she was the weakest, but it's been going on for so long that it is the expected thing.

I wouldn't say it's a feminism thing. "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" couldn't be considered a feminist movie, because not only does it go for the "motherhood makes women crazy and irrational and unable to be trusted with power" thing from Avengers Disassembled, but the "good" girl only gets confidence in her powers when the man shows her. But it's still a movie where the woman is more powerful than any man and the man does nothing to bring about the ending except cheering a girl on. It's not feminist, it's just terrible.

It's been a problem even before Endgame. Just got worse after. The women aren't even sexy or believably competent. They all have to just be the bestest ever & believe themselves to be the best. No work or character arcs needed.

I remember cringing at that awful Black Widow hallway fight scene in Iron Man 2. It doesn't even look cool, just flat-out boring with none of the goons standing even a bit of a chance and the choreography not being good enough to compensate for it.

Don't look at me, I was one of the people saying it sucked for taking a comic whose whole point was to send a private detective out on cases in the MU, and take one story arc and make it the entire series.

That might be because they wanted to make a big statement about toxic men etc. but it's mostly because of the stupid idea Netflix (and not only Netflix) infected the culture with that cases of the week are "filler" and only the main storyline counts.

I can see the same thing working if Jessica had gone out on one or two-part cases and they'd let the main storyline be a running subplot like God intended.

And "toxic men" thing was also a major aspect because it motivated the writers to make Purple Man way too pathetic to take seriously. He's not a chilling psychological horror villain 5D chessmaster. He spends the movie running away from the mad slasher, the only multiversal people he meets are mostly wiped out when he’s not even there, and the ending would have been the same anyway because Wanda snaps back to being good the minute it occurs to her that her variant’s children don’t like her.

Nobody really does anything in the movie, it’s just a series of murders + the cool looking Zombie Strange.

I don't remember the movie too well but I rememebr liking that him constantly finding ways to escape and get out of different trials shows Strange's resourcefulness, but perhaps more as sort of a trickster character than a pure hero.

That can work -- it certainly works with Indiana Jones, who is established right away as the guy who always loses the artifact and wins mostly just by keeping himself alive against all odds.

I didn't feel like they were really doing that with Strange, if only because they don't give him a lot of clever ways of escaping Wanda. But you're right that a hero doesn't necessarily have to "drive the plot" to be strong.

To be fair, both examples of Sue in film are bad because they're mischaracterizing her. Sue's certainly not useless but First Steps overcorrects (much like the contemporary comics) in some ways while frustratingly getting close to Sue's true characterization.

Sue's role in the team is that she's the empathetic one, the heart and moral center of the team. She's the sad one. The girl who was forced to grow up quickly into a mother. She doesn't save the day with violence, but is able to stop the problems that the F4 come across with compassion and understanding.

Her befriending Mole Man was great. Wonderful. But her defeating Galactus was ridiculous, it's just as bad as telling Johnny to kill the Surfer.

The movie should have either fully ripped off Rise of the Silver Surfer and had Sue be the one to empathize and show mercy to the Surfer, or followed the comics and give that role back to Alicia Masters while Reed uses the Nullifier to scare off Galactus.
