I like the idea of Popeye given an over the top battle manga face lift but one thing it didn't have to copy from that is convoluted storytelling full of characters and endless talking.

I'm not familiar with it. but the art seems nice. It will indubitably be very different from the original comics in spirit. Like >>149978303 said, the original had some pretty odd but interesting dialogues and scenes.

It has plenty of action and lots of potential to do some cool stories, though

It was good, at worst, just fine. Kind of a shame nobody’s talking about it, but it didn’t get much promotion. My biggest complaints are the lack of action (compared to what I expected) and the way issue 5 wrapped up. That issue was basically one big lore dump, which led to more questions than answers. And then it ended on a cliffhanger. That kind of ending would be fine if we knew the series was going to continue, but since there’s no confirmation, we’re left hanging. So now we’ve got an interesting story that probably won’t get a follow-up, which sucks. That said, the art is fantastic and the women are hot, so overall a solid 7/10.

I dont think Olive Pyl is supposed to be cute. Part of the joke is that she's homely and doesnt have a great body either. But these are ancient public domain characters and no one will ever draw cartoons as well as the Fleischer Studios again so fuck it, may as well have fun with them. I'd much rather see a Popeye reboot than the ten thousandth Scooby Doo reboot

I always thought that Olive was cute in the face but a lanky plank with a shrill voice.

Popeye's dad even calls her a she-male in the old comic (last panel on this page)

Because it's a comic book. Shit's niche. Would've had more eyes on it had it been an actual manga or anime.

Yeah, that joke often gets lost in translation. In Segar’s original art, this was much more obvious; everyone in those comic strips looked rough and gritty (except for the characters who were meant to be attractive). But as the art style evolved over time, the designs became softer and cleaner, and that rough edge got lost.

I feel like if you turned these strips in a cartoon, they would be a success, they are just unhinged enough to caught attention.

Not with woman being hit and stuff, wouldn't sit well at all.
There's also the mermaid women that really enjoy Popeye's pops company, that could be removed as well

I don't even think the old Popeye cartoons had Olive getting hit every other short. Olive was always restrained in some way, usually flailing about and yelling.

I like the art and the basic story but the artist needed some editor to tone down the writing

Yeah Olive took a hit SOMETIMES but it wasn't done to the point of it being questionable. Popeye's no wife-beater, and doesn't like seeing his girlfriend beat either.

Yeah, it was too verbose at time.

Did Bluto ever show up in later Segar strips? All the documentaries I’ve seen say he was only meant as a one off character.

This

The need for some fiction to also craft elaborate lore has ruined many a good premise
