It's a shame cel animation as a whole died off, because even stuff like Spongebob season 1 had some absolutely gorgeous backgrounds and shots. We still get some phenomenal looking digital shows, but nothing can really compare.
Anon makes a good point, since the switch to digital the art in cartoons as a whole lost their soul.

You also gotta remember with the rise of computers it became cheaper to just do it digitally. It's like with the King of The Hill revival, they can try to imitate the shows old artstyle but they'll never replicate the feeling, the warmness. You get what I mean?

Wouldn't it be possible to just recreate the cel look digitally? I know it's possible because there's tutorials on how to do it in Photoshop. Hire a separate team that just does that to each animation frame.

Recent anime have done gags or even entire episodes with an intentionally cel-shaded look. Its not a matter of whether its *possible* or no, the simple fact is that people just... don't care.
Something that oldfags will never accept is that there is nothing special or holy about cel shaded animation. Its not inherently better, people appreciate how it looks or shows that came out in that era but don't feel strongly that shows are better made in its image.

Think of it this way: how would you feel about people in the modern day demanding that movies go back to being in black and white, and then repainted by hand back into technicolor? It was impressive, it has an extremely vibrant look to it, some very famous movies were done this way... but its not an *improvement* over what we have now. Its paying more money for something that we left behind for a reason.

One thing I find odd is that, in theory, nowadays there's more money circulating than before, more consumers and possibility of products than before, so why did everything become cheaper? Why the decision to cheapen everything? Why not make traditionally-animated shows?
