DC Studios is only just now building back up the brand after a string of garbage movies that ended with the Joker’s crust getting busted. Superman was never going to be a box office smash hit because of the brand’s damaged reputation. It’s an uphill battle.
MCU put out way too much garbage due to cockiness and thinking they can just throw shit at the wall and have people show up to it. Cap 4 and Thunderbolts were never going to make money. Nobody likes Sam Wilson’s Cap and Thunderbolts has too many characters that nobody gives a fuck about in it. Their most successful movies since Endgame (Spider-Man: Far From Home & No Way Home, Deadpool & Wolverine) were starring Marvel’s most popular properties (Spidey & X-Men).

Fantastic Four would’ve been a hit if RDJ’s Doom had a more prominent role in it, but any time the MCU adapts a hero that’s been done before, Feige and his crew are so absolutely hellbent on changing everything about it. “OH, WE GOTTA MAKE IT FRESH! WE CAN’T DO ANYTHING THE PREVIOUS MOVIES DID! WE CAN’T HAVE DOCTOR DOOM IN ANY CAPACITY EXCEPT FOR TWO SECONDS AT THE END!” and it’s fucking stupid.

That's what these threads ignore. No one's going to a movie theater for ANYTHING anymore. It costs too much. Every time I go to a movie theater, it's a ghost town. Everywhere has shut down their ticketing boxes, you order on a kiosk, Fandango, or at the overworked concession stand. I haven't been in a full theater, even on opening night, in years, outside of F4 and Superman.

I slightly believe in superhero fatigue, but it's not like anything else is filling the space. It's movie fatigue.

The last actually good MCU movie was The Winter Soldier. Before that they were generally pretty good. Cap 1, IM1, Thor 1, all pretty good and hold up.

Actually I’d even say Strange 1 fucks. But the rest are just mid grade shag or garbanzo beans.

>This is NOT normal
Actually it is normal, most superhero movies did poorly or outright bombed for the vast majority of movie history, with only a few notable exceptions like the original Superman movie or Batman '89. This is just a return to the norm, superhero stuff was always going to be a fad. There are people entering adulthood who spent the entirety of the part of their lives with a developed sense of self within the 14 years this post is talking about, eventually people just get tired of the same thing.

Yep. We're reverting back to before the MCU took off and before Hollywood was pandering to China. The only difference is the DVD/Blu-Ray market is now becoming even more exclusive, streaming has cut into DVD sales, cable, and theaters, and everyone has phones with 24/7 internet access wherever they go.

If movies want to survive as a luxury product, they must slash their budgets and return to marketing with American audiences in mind first.
Anonymous No.149984374

Pretty much. Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man are the exceptions but that's really only because of them being the most popular super-heroes on the planet. And the MCU only really got as far as it did because of RDJ.

But what people also forget is not just COVID but also studios' push for streaming

>>149984071
This. People focusing on the superheroes are somehow not noticing how other stuff is doing. the latest Mission Impossible probably would've gotten way more in a pre-COVID, pre-studio streaming channels era

Superhero fatigue only exists for non event Superhero movies. Gunn and Feige need to start making more event movies instead of filler trash. Superman and Fantastic Four were filler films while Deadpool and Wolverine and No way home were gigantic events. People want there superhero movies to feel important not like episodes from a TV show.

Westerns were culturally relevant for wayyy longer. Like back to stage plays and radio shows.
Even if you just talk about film, from The Great Train Robbery to Dances with Wolves, westerns had an epic 87 year timespan as the most popular film genre.

In the past even greedy producers knew a lot about entertainment and had a lot of passion for their projects.

I rewatched Iron Man 1 last week and its hilarious how much better it is compared to the usual MCUslop.

And Im not saying just the less quips, it also is much better SHOT and mature in tone. They dedicate scenes to show random pilots in airplanes panicking as they fight Tony.

You can also notice how the camera work and photography were better, these days its mostly Close ups or plain boring shots.

Difference was, while they didn't have a complete script, they knew the general gist of the story, and Favreau had a specific vision front and center. Compare that with BNW, which by reports was largely made by comitee and no one knew what they really wanted to make (and I've heard it definetly shows in the final product).
