Because if you beat your enemy with your fists, all you have proven is that you are a better fighter than they are. Giving your protagonists wins where they defeat the enemy not by defeating militarily, but logically or rhetorically, conveys WHY the villains are in the wrong.

Without some wins under your belt that establish why your position as the good guy is actually superior INDEPENDENT of your strength, all you have left is might makes right.

Wins by cleverness are also good, yes. Though there is a strong overlap between this and moralistic wins, because cleverness wins often exploit weaknesses in the enemy's organization or scheme that show why their ideas don't pay off anyway. Cleverness wins don't create weaknesses in the enemy, they just reveal what was already there and rub it in the bad guy's face.

I dunno. It made the Transformers less impressive to me that the humans were so easily able to btfo them once they knew they existed and they were little bitches to sabot and HEAT rounds. By that point you didn't really need the Autobots and they were probably kind of a liability.

the issue is that the end result of this typically makes the protag look useless and frail if he literally has to beg the badguy to not do what he wants and hope he has enough of a conscience to realize he's the badguy and completely changes his mind about everything
