Like, I get the appeal, I do, but I wish more people understood that this just means in practice that the animal is only horny at specific times during the year.

Not having such a cycle just means humans are basically "in heat" at all times, meaning getting horny isn't seasonal. A sapient species having such a cycle probably just means they aren't horny for much of the year - it's not some sort of special "I MUST FUCK IMMEDIATELY" response beyond horniness.

TL;DR: It's literally just seasonally limited horniness.

What's more interesting is stuff like the Lordosis reflex (female raising hindquarters and exposing genitals to male), but that can be suppressed even during heat (a stressed-out female is unlikely to display it; it's not like an incapacitation for obvious selection pressure reasons) and only exists in quadrupeds.
