Sonic games don't have a continuity. The whole planet and all the people on it look completely different in every game. All the references to previous games are just easter eggs.

That's not a huge issue in the games because the stories are largely episodic, even the ones sequenced through numerals.
It's a problem with the comic because it's got decompressed syndicated story telling that doesn't even let most issues stand on their own.

This does not make sense, currently a new villain has 6 of the chaos emeralds and the current arc has a new character who has the last.

Frontiers requires that the emeralds all end up scattered to the Starfall Islands. This makes no sense to happen after issue 83, it only makes sense to have happened earlier in the comic. where? I am not sure.

Personally is the stagnancy of being unable to full embrace the whole of the games in contrast to the Forces Status Quo.
I think good stories can be told in it but the way they should treat everything is that all the games are resources to draw upon and new games are new tools for the toolbox.
That means bringing in the Humans and GUN, and Gaia callbacks, and weird time shit as a result of the Time Eater, and everything else.

The potential for some truly gonzo and wild shit to be fuel for the fire is there, but none of it can be touched in any reasonable amount, leaving us with Dracula? I guess.

IDW isn't canon thus has no timeline placement. Sonic Team MIGHT (and that's a big might) import stuff from IDW into the games but the side media itself is not canon.
