The plot was functionally sound, hitting all the beats, but it was bogged down with its compulsion to prove every minute that this is adult. It had already earned its R-rating with the sex scenes and balls. Defenders are right to say an adult comedy doesn't need heavy, mature themes like Fritz The Cat, but half the swears could've been swapped with more visual gags or characterization. The weed scene probably existed as an excuse for Genndy and Scott Wills to get visually experimental, only it didn't go far enough, so it just came across as another "we have this R-rating, let's put drugs in there". During the 14 years Genndy spent trying to sell this, I would've expected him to plan each sequence to perfection, rather than merely indulge in being "for adults" with jokes that felt peppered in at the last moment. It's the parts everyone seems to be mad at that hold up the movie, like the gay rape, because that's when it's being original with its humor and increased animation quality.

>During the 14 years Genndy spent trying to sell this, I would've expected him to plan each sequence to perfection
I probably thought this was how long-planned animation projects were developed, but I lon longer think it's true, at least for Genndy. If you watch Unicorn it's obvious that the actual episodes were worked out only after getting green lit.
>It's the parts everyone seems to be mad at that hold up the movie, like the gay rape, because that's when it's being original with its humor
agreed, it's so out there it's memorable (dare I say funny), compared to the "celebrities improving "fuck" in the recording booth" dialogue that feels played out

When a movie has problems, people use it as free reign to criticize things that aren't problems. I saw a lot of anons saying to get rid of the balls/buttholes and actually make the dogs sexy when Genndy put that shit in the movie so it stays "silly sex" and doesn't cross the line into actual furry. The "human style" gag is like a one-off joke, but imagine how much more backlash there'd be if the whole movie was like that.
Anonymous No.149998143

Unicorn was indeed a sorry sum made up of some good parts, much like Fixed. And I agree on the dialog. Genndy said in an interview he added a load of dialog in order to sell the script, and then took it out. I'd hate to read what dialog was cut.

>>149997296
What Fixed doesn't leave to the imagination deflates the desire to see what it does by making it a joke. It isn't outright porn (missing genitals), nor is it merely suggestive (lumpy hairy balls and puckered buttholes). To have no balls/butts at all would appeal to furries more, as any potential sex appeal is undercut (and I'm talking about for guys like >>149997020 ). It seems paradoxical and took some suspension of disbelief, but I think it was the only way for this type of movie to go. Related, Genndy said the CG tests got too gross.

According to an animator, this movie took about four years to make. Given that the production wrapped just a year after this screening, whatever they saw in there was, really, just an unfinished version.

Somebody suggested just making it a silent film where the animation is the same but the dogs communicate through dog barks and pantomine. I feel like whatever the audience can imagine the dogs thinking would be ten times funnier than the material written for the film. I'd also just suggest making each gag more extreme. It's too safe. If the movie wants to shock then it needs to shock. Make it crazier, make it weirder, make it more audacious.
>Make the dog park like Woodstock for dogs. Doggy depravity heaven.
>Make the alley drug trip nightmarish and trippy, like Pink Elephants crossed with the Beavis and Butthead acid trip sequence.
>Give the cats a more menacing, creepy presence. Play with the weird logic the dogs come up with. Give them a better payoff: make them part of the third-act conflict.
>Make Bull's night out more dramatic. Make squirrel chasing more than an absolute bloodbath, make it a squirrel massacre. Squirrel 9/11. Kill the squirrel in front of its family and then kill the squirrel's family. But only do all of this after the squirrel spends the whole movie fucking with the dogs and getting away with it.
>Dog gluttony. The dogs need to ENJOY the food, it should be PARADISE. Euphoria. Nirvana.
>Make the pound depressing as hell. Scary. Your last meal before you get put to sleep is dry, tasteless, sandpaper kibble. Have a scene where one of the dogs is almost put to sleep (with a gun?)
>Make the dogcatchers drunken, sadistic assholes, that way we root for the dogs to escape.
>Make the dog show eerie and alien, like the dogs are all disgusting inbred mutant dog abominations that humans adore. They act like robots. No doggy impulses. Make the tone weird, make it like the 1920's Metropolis.
>Make the yard pastoral and beautiful. This is a home Bull should love. A safe, confined yard he should never want to leave unless something drastic were to happen.
And to reiterate, MAKE IT DIALOGUE-FREE. No talking, no celebs. Only visual gags and music.

Replace 2/3rds of the fucks with β€œbark” or β€œwood”, Make it so the characters are bipedal anthros but are still treated like pets by the humans, make it a musical with the dog show as an electro-swing rap number, have Lucky and Fetch become a comedic gay couple a la Timon and Pumba, and replace the rape scene with Bull and Sterling sword fighting with their dicks and sterling falling off a building into the cats from earlier in the film, where they maul him to death off screen.
Also replace the bear with a wolf, with Bull saying β€œwell shit… guess I’m not a barking savage wolf after all”.
At least it would be better than whatever the fuck >>150000439 said.

Early character designs got leaked some time back.
https://desuarchive.org/co/thread/147289026/
They weren't totally sure about which breed to use for each dog, and they experimented on that.
Along with the testicles, the penile sheaths of the male dogs were visible in the early designs.
That concept art shows Bull with the character design that ended up in an early piece of promotional art, from back when they were thinking of making the movie in CGI instead of 2D (pic related).

In some interview it was stated that the dogs in the movie were inspired by Genndy's friends. There used to be a Siberian Husky named Boris who had a heavy accent and was based on Genndy himself. His character ended up cut because there were too many characters.

>>150000062
The original concept involved animal characters having a wild night out, execs told Genndy they need some kind of a hook for the story, then he asked "what if one of them is a dog and he finds out he's gonna get neutered in the morning", and that's when they bought the pitch.
