Baby blues
Man, I love hags so fucking much. Why did Baby Blues (2002) fail? Was it because it was too generic?
You can actually watch the entre show on YouTube now, it's completely forgotten.

They focused on being like Family Guy, but not enough. They even invented a crude next door couple.
Should have fo used on the McPersons with a 4 year old Zoe and a baby brother. Tiny babies don't work for sitcoms because they lack agency.

Stoner humor was(and still is) the big thing at the time. The Baby Blues cartoon appealed to people who drink wine from a wine glass on the couch at night. Basically too old fashioned for adult cartoons as it was taking a lot from classic adult sitcoms. Some adult and sex jokes thrown here or there but not ranchy enough to show or do anything. Still would pick it over something like Bob's Burgers any day of the week.

Also WB just didn't give 2 shits about their cartoons.

They tried making an β€œadult comedy” out of a fluffy newspaper comic and it didn’t work. Basically every channel wanted their β€˜Simpsons’ and for a while it didn’t seem like anything would stick around for a season or two due to bad ratings, but then Comedy Central struck gold with South Park and FOX struck again with Family Guy leading to, again, every channel trying to find their hit adult animated comedy. Baby Blues was another example among the endless tries. The show just oozes desperation. They even name drop South Park and talk about how funny it is. They gave Wanda the 7 year itch and Darrell is pathetic. This place throws around β€œhumiliation ritual” a lot, but I don’t know how else to describe what Darrell is. This show is a mess and it’s interesting given the history behind it, but still pretty crap and has nothing to do with the comic.

Maybe cause at the time the newspaper comic it was based on was more focused on the wacky antics of the kids and just family life in general. You had Zoey and Ham being older in that series.
The cartoon show as really just about the parents and Zoey was just a baby. So most likely didn't appeal to the comic fans.

Doesn't even seem like they had much faith in the original source material since a huge percentage of every episode ends up being about the next door neighbors who don't seem to have even existed in the original comics.

People called Peter Griffin a rip off of Homer but this guy's design is way more of a rip-off. I mean just look at him. He even has a bratty little troublemaker son akin to Bart so there's a lot of that Simpsons "*Homer getting mad at Bart* WHY YOU LITTLE!..." dynamic between the two.

. Though Dilbert was WAY more popular at the time than Baby Blues. And at least it was doing something different besides the standard "cartoon about your average family" theme everyone was trying to imitate after the Simpsons.

Even Matt Groening knew not to just copy himself and make Futurama "the Simpsons but in the future" show.

Sunday comic strips were read by very few people, like stamp collecting niche by the late 90's. The ones that did get a cartoon, 90% of the audience never knew they were based on something. And we're talking about the 90's here where everything had a cartoon so it was nothing to gasp at.

I was happy it got a cartoon as I was the soul few reading the comic strips long before then but somehow even I knew the comic wasn't that popular. It was competing with some heavy hitters. Wish I could remember what though. I know Peanuts and Garfield were running at one point and I remember both eventually being replaced at some point but that's all.

>Basically too old fashioned for adult cartoons as it was taking a lot from classic adult sitcoms. Some adult and sex jokes thrown here or there but not ranchy enough to show or do anything.
It's surprisingly rare to find a good adult animated show that doesn't rely on shock humor or stoner humor. Most of the shows that try it (Baby Blues, Dilbert, Mission Hill) just hit a uncanny valley where they're too slow and unexciting to appeal to kids, but too tame to appeal to adults (especially compared to their edgier competitors). If your average normie accidentally caught an episode of Mission Hill or Baby Blues without knowing anything about either, they'd probably just assume it was a kid's show and turn it off, which is probably why so many shows that tried this failed miserably. It seems the only way to succeed with a less graphic adult cartoon is to either become a kid's show in everything but name (modern Bob's Burgers) or be carried by exceptionally good comedic writing (Home Movies, Dr Katz, King of the Hill).

Family Guy didn't come back from cancellation just because of [adult swim], it also got a ton of DVD sales which showed FOX there was still a huge market for it:
>The complete first and second seasons were released on DVD the same week the show premiered on Adult Swim, and the show became a cult phenomenon, selling 400,000 copies within one month.[98] Sales of the DVD set reached 2.2 million copies,[107] becoming the best-selling television DVD of 2003[108] and the second-highest-selling television DVD ever, behind the first season of Comedy Central's Chappelle's Show.

Plus FOX in general has a way better track record with their animated shows than the likes of WB and UPN did. "Animation Domination" is kind of an apt name for their Sunday cartoon block since it's like the other networks don't even try anymore.

Regarding the specific shows, the PJ's did get 3 seasons in total but 2 of them were on FOX before it switched to the WB. It was notable enough it at least got a cameo in the Simpsons. But with it's claymation style and having Eddie Murphy involved it had a high budget which gave it all the more reason to get cancelled.

Aired a lot on Cartoon Network UK. The show was fine, I felt it was too tame to catch on during the same period where Family Guy and Futurama were coming out. The show has an entirely complete second season that was a tax writeoff and will never see the light of day. Isn't that sad? Oh well..

More importantly than all of that: the babysitter was hot, and also the birthday lady from episode 6 was hot. Lots of fappable girls sprinkled throughout, really.

given the recent cases of totally unexpected lost media getting unearthed, it wouldn't be the craziest thing, how to get that ball rolling idk...

I gotta imagine one of the most painful things as a creator is to have your hard work stored away for no good reason. the feeling of "little old me?" when you approach them probably means a lot, who knows

>like, how many people would even care about this?
maybe I'm naive but I always saw any comic that got syndicated as kind of exalted?
not exactly royalty, but a big enough deal that there's already a built-in audience for it

>The other option is to wait for Adult Swim to randomly release it
>(that's how we got the last 5 episodes from the first season)
b-b-based? I never knew that. for anyone looking on archive.org they actually list those last 5 as season 2, lest you get your hopes up

I watched it back in the day when nothing else was on. It felt about 5 years out of date when it aired. I can't stand the theme song, and the Hollywood-studio opening sequence was weird and disconnected. For me it killed time until the shows I really wanted to watch came on. I liked Bizzy though and still read the comic strip in the paper. It's longevity is noted.

you read my mind, I feel like that was a case of the comic translating very well to the medium

The fact Guisewite was so closely involved + the full circle of the Peanuts animation team working on her Peanuts inspired cartoon helped a lot

>What are some other forgotten newspaper strip adaptations?
it's appropriate in this thread I find out For Better or For Worse had a short lived animated run

I bet. considering he only illustrates the ideas the writer provides, he's not as likely to be overly protective. I could be wrong about that, not sure how it is from artist to artist

he rarely indulges in fanservice, but that's probably the censors

this blurb actually has some insight on their back and forth, makes me wonder what raunchier strips they made for themselves...
