Could the average comic book be adapted 1:1 like many manga are? Many animated series have little 1:1 references, but usually never a shot by shot remake with identical dialogue.

That's pretty much what Watchmen was going for in the movie.

I remember reading an actual good analysis on the difference between comics and manga, and it pointed out manga are often drawn as animation storyboards, while comics (at least traditionally) are written short stories with some illustrations attached. That is why manga is better adapted to 1:1 animation adaptation. Of course modern comics have decompression but the writing and art is often shit and the pacing is so slow is doesn't make for good adaptations, not that its even worth adapting.

off topic but man, I never liked the way those “full color” version manga look, the colors always came across too flat for some reason

Snyder also tried it with 300.

Agreed. It's super cheap. You'll enjoy akira though.

Nothing in BATB is really "1:1" to any one comic.
I mean in your example alone it's aFrank Miller inspired Batman kicking a Curt Swan/Wayne Boring inspired Superman drawn in a style homaging Dick Sprang, with some Jack Kirby dots thrown in.

Sans the color of course.

Dragonball doesn't count cause manga Goku is nuanced. He'd arrogant and cocky as a kid, wants to pick a fight, only wants revenge against Piccolo and Freiza. He cares for his son while expect him to be his successor. Anime Goku is a paragon. It took Daima to adapt Goku after Toei Goku made too many brash decisions.

I was gonna say something similar. A lot of manga is meant to be cinematic
A lot of comics, especially older ones, have roots in pulp and book adaptations and the art serves what's written. Lots of flowery prose in little text boxes.

They could, but they won't. The reasons are pretty obvious why not, and they all involve money.

No comics arent written the same way, they skip around and compress a lot of information. And the superheroes are often wearing their costumes in places where the real actors would prefer normal clothes or often times some bit of lore youre expected to have read is explained in a totally different comic so if you just 1:1 adapt it you will miss some information then. Ill give an example, the movie Infinity War with Thanos does directly adapt some scenes from Thanos appearences but it swaps the characters for the ones they had available to use and infuses bits from Hickmans Infinity, Silver Surfer v2 (had tie in Thanos story arcs), the infinity gauntlet, and maybe some others im missing. And the first Avengers movie is a fusion of classic Avengers origin + Ultimate Avengers. They had to do story mashups to recontectualize everything while still using the stories as inspiration. Some of the DC animated movies do near 1:1 adaptations tho, then you have Watchmen, but the live action movies are too expensive and they want mass appeal so they are willing to disregard the source material to get that. Whereas again with manga/anime its usually animated and made for a core audience of the fans with lower budgets than giant hollywood blockbusters.

Yeah. You just do it. A comic is already a story board. It's how the did sin city.
They dont do it on purpose. For their own reasons.

I feel like western comics usually engage with the medium of comics more than manga, approaching pages as complete illustrations in service of augmenting a story, rather simply storyboarding a script like most manga does; but that also makes it harder to adapt western comics to other medium like film or animation.

Like even the best director would struggle to put a page like this to screen.

>ould the average comic book be adapted 1:1 like many manga are?
No because they will be raped with live action adaptions and those dont give a fuck about comics as anything besides as a marketing gimmick at best.

Why would you want them to be. Animation is an automatically better medium. There's a lot comics have over other ones that are unique and crafted specifically for

I do agree. It has its down sides(I remember someone on here saying that "all comic artists are cover artists") but comic artists do attempt to treat the whole page as a piece of art itself

Nah. They changed way too much. At best, they somewhat matched a handful of panels.

Could it? Yes.

Will it happen? No.

Why? Because cartoon writers in the US do not respect the work they're adapting, and in many cases they're not even familiar with it prior to getting the role of adapting it.

Successful manga writers are considered geniuses and masters.

Successful comic writers are considered talentless but lucky.
