The whole premise of Transformers is that, as morbid as it sounds to say, the Cybertronians DESERVED extinction. They did it to themselves. They're a self-destructive species and they reaped what they sowed. The Autobots have the self-awareness to realize this, and instead focus their resources on making sure humanity, the morally superior species, doesn't fall into the same trap. While the Decepticons are cowards who can't take responsibility and are willing to sacrifice a whole species to fix a problem they created. It's actually pretty deep, for a kid's cartoon

Hypothetically-speaking, what would Megatron even do with humanity if he ruled Earth? Humans are too small, weak, and feeble to do anything Cybertronians might actually have any use for. But on the plus side he could actually get most of humanity to willingly give-up our freedom for a few hundred years of significantly improved quality of life and when nobody alive knows anything about a time before decepticons ruled the world he can gradually decrease our expectations until we're worse off than we ever have been historically and we just accept it.

But the question remains: why bother subjugate us at all?

In the G1 cartoon Earth's energy production is sufficient for the Decepticons. There's plenty of times the Decepticons roll up to a hydroelectric dam or something with empty energon cubes and fill those suckers up.

Even in the episode where they go back to King Arthur's court, a bunch of humans turning a giant wheel was sufficient to produce energy for the few Decepticons to maintain functionality, albeit at only a basic almost subsistence level.

I recommend it. At best it is a fun action romp with a rotating cast of character focus episodes and at worse a really funny and campy cartoon about robot man children. I actually watched it on DVD growing up because my parents knew I liked the toys but only knew about the old cartoon they themselves saw growing up...including a copy of the original animated picture....

In the G1 days any fight between an Autobot and a Decepticon was pretty much guaranteed to go in favor of the Decepticon unless it was Optimus or the dinobots.

Starscreamed kicked nearly everyone's ass until Optimus noticed him. A few guys like Prown and Tracks also agreed Starscream is an auto-win against them before they even try.
