One thing that always bothered me is how few episodes there are that actually live up to the show's premise (going on adventures and solving crypts) and how much of it follows the hopeless romantic advances of literal 12 year olds. This is really when the whole "writers inserting their personal issues" thing started in cartoons, since the show premiered before Adventure Time went balls deep into that and before Steven Universe aired too. I get the feeling most people remember it as being the former which is why it's so praised

It depends. A best friend doesnt always work out to make a show better. Like that black kid in the loud house. He was a literal diversity hire, and he does absolutely nothing except echo the main character. Dipper is interesting enough to focus an episode on, and there were other supporting characters for him to tag team with. For example, him and Pacifica could have had alot more adventures.
