Is there a name for this style? Why does it scream "western faux anime made for Netflix show"?

Why do you need a name for everything? Shit being so categorized is part of what got us into this mess to start with

No one wants to blame competent things. Hell, no one is gonna blame Korra either because Korra is a hot buff chick and the show still has good character designs.

I honestly hate the "Voltron art style" because it's Christine Bian's art direction on Voltron lifting from Ki Hyun Ryu's art direction from TLOK which itself is lifting from ATLA's art direction which was mostly Bryan Konietzko, Angela Mueller, and Oh-Seung Kyun.

ATLA's art direction was great because it lifted from anime in the right way. Simpler character designs fit for animation that had just enough detail to be pegged as clearly American.

The problem with TLOK/Voltron/Castlevania is that they went for MORE detailed designs in order to distinguish themselves as "adult" and for a teenage audience but didn't account for how these characters would look in motion or whether or not it would look appealing. You can't just slap on excess detail onto a character design because it makes it MORE EXPENSIVE TO ANIMATE and exhausting to draw. Ironically, that's why these shows end up actually resembling anime in how little actual animation they end up getting outside of big set pieces. But because of the composition, choreography, storyboarding, and mise en scene all being so very western, nobody can truthfully call it "anime" without lying to themselves or dumbing it down to purely style.

Avatar was patient zero but Netflix took the formula and weaponized it.

She-Ra really got the short end of the stick in terms of character design because Stevenson's art is kinda nice to look at, but the art direction for She-Ra got spitroasted by the post-Korra trend AND the cheaper beanmouth trend with an emphasis on less detail and more roundness.

You can tell this board is filled with fucking tourists who don't give a shit about comics and animation when they always talk about old shit that's festered for a while as new

AtLA doesn't even look like other faux-anime from its own time period.
Totally Spies is older than it.

If anyone accuses Invincible that gets a pass since Walker himself is on board with the show and even then it still alters his artstyle for animation purposes

ATLA very rarely looks like an anime. It's funny because people only said that because the idea of a kids cartoon being well animated and having a decent artstyle in 2005 was damn near unheard of.

If you edited out Superman and the shield on Kara and showed this to someone who had never seen the show they would not be able to identify a single fucking character in this.

So no shit they look the same

If we're going that route we should call 99% of American animation the Snipple style since nearly every show is drawn by the same few hundred Filipinos

And what do you think should be done when a company announces an X thing "anime", so that it doesn't feel like another derivative of the legend of Korra or Voltron?

Do you have any examples?

Bro we get it, you no longer find joy in life and things you used to enjoy, so now you need to complain about it and try to make others hate it too.
Is it a great style? Eh. Is it terrible? Also eh. We should judge everything on one facet of it and not look into it any further. You're getting older and falling into the trap of judging everything by its cover because you no longer enjoy things.

Yeah. I think if you're doing stylized, anatomically correct people, in an animated action show, there's gonna be stuff that inevitably "looks like anime" because there's only same many ways to do it without landing on the same techniques.
It's like schizos who see different cultures making pyramids and concluding they all knew each other. But even then, we are a global civilization now, so they're bound to see anime do things on a budget and cause other people to think "hm these techniques could be useful"
