I'll be honest the kaiju fight took me out of the movie entirely as it made me realize that there were almost no stakes at all.
Like on top of the fact that it's way too on the nose (like seriously at this point just have Superman stare straight into the camera and say "no one dies in this movie they only get knocked out so you can't criticize us the same as the last Superman movie"), there's also the fact that you can see the kaiju in the background just roaring. Like seriously the giant monster that was engineered to cause wanton destruction, and was just doing all that, takes a fucking pause so Superman can confirm all the fuckers inside are safe. The bad guy, waits for the hero, to save everyone.

Lex was, surprisingly, the highlight of the film. Considering Nick Hoult's typical casting (and how thin the guy is) I assumed we were getting another version of the dorky Jesse Eisenberg Lex, but he was way more of a traditional supervillain than I could have hoped. He's like, in a manic rage the entire film, and Hoult plays him in such a way that literally shooting an innocent man in the head execution style and then going back to the office and knocking a mug off a desk as an afterthought just to make your underlings pick it up are both totally believable for the character. Superman 2025 Lex is just unabashedly, sadistically evil and Hoult pulls it off despite generally looking like someone who would blow away in a stiff breeze.

It's mostly because Cornsweat has Superman's "aw shucks" All-American boy scout personality down pat and they make a point showing him saving people and caring about random bystanders that was so conspicuously absent in Man of Steel. Acting as the β€œnon-black allowed” Superman of the good old Silver Age. When Kirby introduced black characters into the stories, Superman probably lost more than half of his Midwestern and Southern readership. That may be why they pulled Kirby; you can't have super whitey with black people. Superman's Chicago looked like a utopia envisioned by some white supremacist.

Did anyone else think Superman was going to talk Metamorpho into helping him? It's like they had a perfect opportunity to showcase one of Superman's strengths and just didn't take it. The fact that Metamorpho makes his decision completely independently of Superman, simply because he was shocked by Lex' cruelty, and other similar stuff in the movie, kinda undermines the idea that it's "the cheesy wholesome Superman movie you've been waiting for". Rather than going for the tried-and-true trope option, Gunn goes for the gritty option he thinks is more mature and realistic. You can't just convince someone to help by talking to them, that would be SILLY. They have to witness a murder first.

Jon Kent was genuinely fucking awful, his death scene became a meme because of how unintentionally ridiculous and contrived it was. Cavill barely emotes, making Superman a wooden stoic bore was a huge misstep and it was all because Snyder has a fetish for god complex characters. The "Clark" side of the character barely gets a chance to shine, him showing up at the very end feels entirely unearned and tacked on like they suddenly remembered this was supposed to be a Superman movie. In general the movie was a tonal clusterfuck where Superman snaps Zod's neck and yells one minute then he's immediately sucking Lois' face. The movie being visually brown and gray for huge swaths of it is genuinely an eyesore. The only parts that are generally agreed to be good is Michael Shannon as Zod and the chick that plays Faora but even then they're pretty much squandered. I say all this but at the same time I STILL think Man of Steel could have been built upon for a good sequel if they did some major course correction because it's not a wholly bad movie but of course Snyder being the retard that he is only doubled down on all the worst aspects.

>Cell is a garbage character that was written by editor mandate
Editorial mandates saved Dragon Ball, my guy. If it wasn't for the editor, Dragon Ball would've gotten axed after the first arc. Same with Naruto, which went to shit after the original editor left and Kishi was given too much slack.

Nitpick; but it bothered me Gunn setup Superman reluctantly admitting to strongarming the tyrant guy with torture but didn't quite return for a punchline.

Rex is right there with jagged kryptonite and the president doesn't ask Lex or threaten to press Superman against it, later he simply tells Hawkgirl she's weak instead of saying something smug but dumb like "The cactuses in the desert are that way" before she says "You're not going to the desert." or show him her mace and say "I've got something better in mind." before cutting to black.
Honestly, none of that would enhance anything, but it would conclude where Clark started.

When was this? Are you talking about him being a bit weird about Superboy who is a weird clone of him and Luthor?

That didn't really happen until Super but the rest of your post is truth

what the fuck are you talking about?
Tori invented tournament arcs following an old thing he tried in Dr. Slump and that saved DB. Everything after that is the same formula
>Drive around
>Meet people
>The new people and some original characters fight each other to see who's strongest
Editors just kept Tori working when he wanted to build model bikes and fuck around all day

Have heard more about Mr Terrific by randoms in the last month than I have in the last 20 years by people who read comics.

What's wild is it's not like Michael was unused all that time, he was in Justice League Action and the Terrifics happened, and there were certainly threads about it here don't get me wrong, but it still did little to foster significant discussion.

Casuals may be surface level, but they're more willing to enthusiastically engage whatever crumbs they get than those with full banquets.
Maybe we were the casuals all along.

Why not? They paid for it.

He was never a popular character and some randoms talking about him doesn't elevate him to household name status.

Was in multiple seasons of Arrow and the only discussion I remember was how he braided and undid his hair unrealistically inbetween scenes and that they made him gay.
