I've noticed it's a pick 2 out 3 thing with people. They don't like it if a character is good, competent, and powerful. Most audiences will put up with is edgy good, competent, and better than average.

I like Spider-Man better, but you can't deny that Spider-Man (and really every other superhero) got the template from Superman. I read somewhere in the past that Spider-Man is even kind of written as a parody of Superman. They share the same color scheme and work similar jobs at a newspaper, but instead of being lauded by the newspaper, Spidey's vilified. Instead of a big, strong super chad he's a strong but small bug-themed teen. Instead of a non-masked caped strongman costume, he's a fully covered masked figure. Spidey works in a lot of ways because it was a kind of inversion of what made Superman work.

The whole "he's too powerful" argument never made sense to me. Kryptonite exists specifically so lower level villains can slow him down, and popular powerful characters like Goku, Gojo from Jujutsu Kaisen, and Solo Leveling's protagonist have no weaknesses to speak of...

Hulk is also too strong. Characters stop being characters & just become aura farming reddit slop if they're all powerful with no drawbacks. It worked fine in Silver Age Superman when the stories were just self contained silly ideas to sell comics & war bonds. Not really thought out stories.

Superman is a stand-up guy, he's not flawless, but he's always striving to do the right thing. Popeye, on the other hand, is more of a kind hearted rough neck, no-nonsense kind of guy. I like popeye, but compared to Superman, he's not exactly the best role model.
