I hated the singing at first, found it loud and obnoxious, but after re-viewings I can see what they were going for and how they worked it into the film. Muses narrating was appropriate.
I can at least appreciate this film had its own unique style, even if Scarfe was an odd choice and one I never would have picked in a million years. I'm not a fan of that kind of ugly distorted impressionism, but Disneyfied it's surprisingly tolerable, doesn't affect the main characters too much, etc. Sure can't say it isn't something different.
I really liked how films of that that era would select a setting-appropriate colour palette, (like Mermaid, Lion King, and especially Aladdin really nail that shit), and setting thematic art style integrated into the overall look at a deep level - and this film really dialled that shit up to 11 with the spiral motifs and shit like Meg's figure and 2.5D hair.
Not everything worked and it wasn't exactly the crown jewel of that era objectively speaking, but I personally liked it a lot.
Disney obviously looking for another Robin Williams Genie type character after the success of Aladdin resulting in Hades could have turned out extremely badly, so thank Christ James Woods walked in the door, (and according to him was feeling a little goofy that day). Everything went better than expected.
Cast was generally good. Again they were obviously going for Iago type sidekicks with Pain and Panic with the oddball voice casting, and I liked them. Egan was great and played that part well regardless of how you might have felt about the departure from your standard princess shit, so again, everything kinda went better than expected on paper.
The Yiddish shit felt a little out of place, but I kinda warmed to it after a while. Very weird intermix of religious shit that I'm shocked they even got away with at the time somehow, but I think that was kinda the point, that there was no one thing anyone could get a grip on to complain about.
