I remember an old episode where Lisa was doing babysitting and Bart was a complete little shit and got injured on his own which Lisa had to suffer the consequences of. Back then I fully empathized with Lisa and got mad on her behalf.

This was a complete turnaround.

Not even a big lisa hater but anons most people identified with bart. It was why all the merch usually was bart focused, why their were bart floats tons of knock off bart shirts and stickers. He was the face of the simpsons and still is.

Most because he was the kind of middle of the road kid, not a bully but not a nerd. Mischievous but not evil, this led to him having many redeeming qualities and moments. He very much is connect with most of the simpsons peak episodes and seasons. There's a reason most people, both male and female identify more with Bart than they would with Lisa. The average person isn't some music prodigy or too smart for their age, at best you were a bit above average and usually that led you to be more like bart than lisa. So lisa is hard to connect with even early on as she feels very unrelatable or fake, but they made up for it with tons of interesting plots focusing on her few but big flaws. Now most of those are gone or are rewritten to be flaws of society not her.
