Has there ever been a similarly extreme case of somebody stumbling onto a viral hit by chance and failing utterly to follow through to this extent?

This isn't even close to a case like how Scott Ramsoomair completely wasted his opportunity with VG Cats where he was getting cartoon and high-end merchandise offers from major studios at its height.

You see I think it's the opposite, the artists is clearly trying to make his comic the next big meme. That's why every panel is reaction images and funny little phrases. Last week was a blob monster saying "I love slop" while making a 'jak face.

I never heard of this, did he really have this much of a big chance? What was the reasoning of his decline?
Because for real that sounds like the worst case scenario. I remember the time vg cats was huge... until he started to draw porn of his characters for some reason.

IIRC (It's been well over a decade) he thought he could get a better offer than what he was getting, but then he stopped updating for years and the webcomic fell into relative obscurity.
