Why can I buy a deluxe edition of Berserk but can't buy a trade paperback of Absolute Batman (hottest selling comic) at a Walmart. Why can I find the entire collection of Dogman or Super Diaper Baby, but can't find Compact Comic or a Premier Collection? Why do I need to go to a LCS or a Barnes and Nobles to find this shit, but One Piece omnibus, go into America's largest retailer and it's there.

The crazy part is that it was always like this. Remember as a kid always being in the book section and looking through it all for anything cool and there was always the latest Naruto volume for me to be confused by. But no Superman, Spider-Man, Batman.

nta but everytime ive gone to look for something ive been told "yeah you can order it and well contact you when its here" and then never hear from them. its honestly faster and more reliable to just fucking buy them from amazon.

Because despite Absolute Batman being the top seller right now, it doesn't sell enough to afford a shelf on walmart. It's just basic economics, the only things that get put on shelves, are things that make money.

From I've seen, they were a thing when the first were announced. So You saw Watchmen, Court of Owls and I think All-Star. But after that, whenever a new wave happened, nothing. Same for premiere collection, saw daredevil and that's it after that. Ultimate and Absolute I haven't seen. Absolute I can give credence since it released so soon, but Ultimate not a lick. Maybe it could be stores and what they want to store (A whole section dedicated to YA fiction for Booktok yuck)

Understandable, I guess. Personally I honestly don’t mind waiting for stuff and like to support my LCS, it’s not like Amazon is even any cheaper these days and I’d rather my LCS stuck around as an independent business than line Bezos’ pockets even further.

Well I do because that is the only real avenue I can go through. But I am lucky in that where i live, I have access to a LCS. If you don't and your only other real option is a Barnes and Nobles, which isn't everywhere (hell the one I used go to shut down), then where can you go. The chance of a Walmart being close is not low, and if you go there and check the book section, what will they see. Manga, Scholastic and maybe one off comics (The Manga Bible). The exposure isn't there

If you deal with old boomers that's how they are. I worked at a shop where the owner refused to order comics for people because he was computer illiterate, so I ended up doing it as a side thing for customers.

It probably has to do with the fact that comic distribution was monopolized by Diamond, who is now bankrupt. It's only in like the last few years that DC switched from Diamond to Lunar. And marvel shit is distributed by Penguin Random House (literally the larger book company monopoly now and it's German aka Nazis).

the worst part was, i live in a tiny town and he just couldnt be bothered to reply to my email and when they did it was like 3 weeks after the issue came out so i went to collect it and he went "uhhhhh" and just pulled it off the display shelf" so i felt like a dick for not collecting it. (by this time the NEWER issue had been released).

I saw a youtube short of a girl who went to a comic shop and the absolute batman trade was sold out while the other absolutes trades were in stock. So it probably is selling.

Yeah I heard something similar like that. Like somebody had a pill box/cubby and the owner got pissed cus the guy didn't pick up his comics after like two weeks. Like bro, contact the customer.

My experience right now is that comic shops fail because the owner or employee is an asshole to the customer.

Fuck hipster stores of any kind and I get comics are meant to be used at their best as both tools for art and also being easy to buy like Moore said but are you SURE you want your favorite comics of all time next to these books just so a inbred child who is somehow still biracial can go up to them and go "Look maw! Dats da cool pictire book! Me want!"
"Anything that we can afford on fewd stamps angel pie."

Because those comics sell a lot. So Wal-mart carries them. But they never carry volume 2 or onward of Berserk in physical stores. Vol 1 is just incentive because it's a commonly bought comic, but not enough incentive to order more.
They only keep up to date with a select few manga, and only do collections of a few like One Piece. even then it's more like 3-in-1 collections up to the first 9 volumes

Berserk is one of the most famous comics in the world, and has gone on to influence a hundred other popular franchises as well. Even normies about Berserk, and its maintained its popularity across decades. Walmart might not sell a deluxe edition of Berserk TODAY, but they have a strong reason to believe that they will sell it eventually. It has a long shelf life.

Absolute Batman might be 'current', but no one cares outside of the comic shop crowd. Normies don't know what it is, and would mostly just be upset that this isn't the Batman they wanted when they picked up the book because they don't have the context for this what-if scenario and they absolutely do not care.

Manga, due to having continuing stories, retain their value. Anyone who wants to read One Piece or Naruto will want to read all of it, start to finish. So long as the franchise is popular, every book of it has value.

American capeshit comics lose value in a matter of months. Five years from now the entire Absolute line will be a fading memory for most of the tiny fraction of people that were ever aware of it in the first place, and no one who picks up Batman then has any reason whatsoever to go back and ready the vast majority of any of his past runs, Absolute included.

Meanwhile manga gives normies everything they want from cheap paperback entertaiment.

Wal Mart employee here.

They don't want comics. They don't want to be associated with them. They carry a stigma (extreme sjw politicization, generally weird, parents complain about their content [while ignoring manga's even more graphic content because they assume "cartoon art style = FOR KIDS"]) that Wal Mart does not want to be associated with. Plus when they do try to stock them they just plain do not sell.

It's not about the industry not wanting to put their product in public places. It's about those places not wanting anything to do with the product.
