Part of the problem I think is that Kat's godhood has zero rules to it. Its functionally arbitrary what she can and cannot do, so when she solves a problem its always unsatisfying because it feels like an unearned handwave instead of a payoff.

Tom has absolutely deflated the stakes of his story. I don't know if this was part of his original plan or if he softened in his old age, but why is any of this even a big deal anymore?

Having a character the audience has some connection to die is better than some red shirt. It's not like Red is going to play a pivotal role in the rest of the story anyway
