Not really. Gorrilaz was largely against the celebrity entertainment industry by being a carricature of that same industry. That is why Murdoc was written the way that he was before his "redemption arc" in removing his flat out evil qualities, promising an evil spirit the literal souls of children in return for his music career while giving MTV an over the top crib tour like what half of hip hop was doing at the time. Consumerism was poked at here and there, but that was never the message. The message was that the music industry was fucked. Then post phase 3 that went from the music industry being fucked to the whole world is fucked as they started to do more character focused arcs. Because that's the truth of it all: it was always about the characters. The problem was that the original elements that were genuine were actual political dissidents in the orignal UK scene. Like borderline far right terrorist sort of dissidents. As punk started to become mainstream the dissident elements were shunned and gatekept out by media outlets platforming the genre which removed any genuine anti-corporate conviction the punk rock movement had. That is why Punks were so demonized back then on TV and in literature, they were an actual violent force seeking to upturn authority. The idea that Punks were just anti-establishment "fuck the man, man" is a caricature to make Punks sound aimless and angsty young men when the reality was Britain was an authoritarian hellhole back then (and still is). It was only in America where Punk was just basically anarchist as they did not have the culturak context of Britain to inspire the aesthetic or music. Johny Silverhand is a perfect example of the American model, but foundationally, American style Punk Rock is aimless when compared to the origins of British Punk Rock

Comparing it to DD is an unfair standard as ALL of their albums are mid compared to that. But I would argue on merit it can be compared to ST which is only renowned for being the break out album. People like ST for Clint Eastwood, that's it. Plastic Beach however has more variety.
