Back when these shorts were all airing on TV, these were the only ones I actually remembered that weren't the shows that got picked up.
Well, that's not exactly true. I did remember watching My Freaky Family and Swaroop, I think? But Longhair and Doubledome were the ones I remember LOVING, like genuinely wanting to see more of, I thought they were hilarious.
Contrary to most in this thread I was actually glad to see Robot Jones picked up, when I was a kid I thought the robot voice was really awesome. Then of course they ruined that.
Billy and Mandy and KND were ultimately the right choices, KND especially was a concept the network would've been idiots to pass up.

Robot Jones was a really overt homage to 70s non-Hanna-Barbera productions like Schoolhouse Rock. Which is probably part of why it was so unappealing because Schoolhouse Rock is like the only non-theatrical thing from that era with any lasting appeal.

That was Ed Edd n Eddy, they only switched to digital for season 5 because the company that made the paint they used for cel animation literally went out of business. Robot Jones ended before EEnE's 4th season had finished production.

As good as LH&DD tested with focus groups, I suspect the real reason it didn't get made is because it had no marketing potential and was very well-animated.
CN historically adopted a very cheap production budget for pretty much all of its comedy cartoons. Despite the costs of cel animation, Robot Jones is still drawn extremely loosely and animated very simply. The title character doesn't even have lip flaps most of the time, his eyes just light up instead.
Aside from EEnE, no Cartoon Network comedy show was ever fluidly animated, they all used very effective limited movement. Even shows like Courage were made on the cheap. Longhair and Doubledome looked great but would've either taken a big punch visually, or been really expensive.
As far as marketing potential, no kid is really going to buy a doll or a shirt of some ugly adult cavemen unless they look like Fred Flintstone, and even then kids in the 2000s didn't like that anymore. Despite not getting any merch, Robot Jones is at least a cute and appealing character.
