Bullshit, even in this show Starscream comes up with all the ideas and plans and got closer to fulfilling the Decepticon goals than Megatron (who stood around waiting for his underlings to do something or whisper an idea into his head) and was way ahead of the curve. The wellbeing of the crew and morale waa also better, as he tried to be an actual leader as opposed to a mere boss who bosses bots around like Megatron was. This is likely in part because Megatron likely did suffer space madness in addition to an addiction to mind altering inhibitors.

Starscream is often more wily, aware, or even flat-out more capable than Megatron across many incarnations, but he's rarely got the markings of a leader. I've always felt that it's always been a good mark of irony: Decepticon doctrine where he-who-wins-is-just means that Starscream getting the upper hand on Megatron and taking over is the realization of those ideals, but they would all fall apart if he did. They all ultimately still rely on Megatron and his vision in order to stick together, meaning the proper leader of the Decepticons embodies fewer of their actual ideals and instead is more like a twisted analogue to Prime.

Transformers is one of the few popular and long-running sentient robot shows/franchises, and most of the characters are male, so a lot of straight female and gay male robot fetishists end up concentrated in one fanbase. i do like those "autobot starscream" fics and such, even if he can get pretty OOC in them.

all of team prime seems to hold optimus in high regard, including ratchet, despite his frequent exasperation. it would've been interesting to see how starscream would have fit into team prime. would he have feigned subserviance and acted the sycophant to try and get on optimus's good side, or would he have been blatantly abrasive and uncaring towards optimus's status, since starscream would see himself as too valuable an informant to get rid of?

Fucking 90% of fanfictions in Prime specifically seem to be contaminated with fanon/OOC bulls hit more than others that I've seen for some reason but yeah

Realistically I don't know if he could ever become a full-on Autobot though, even if Starscream knew of Optimus from before the war

it would have to take a MONUMENTAL effort for both the autobots and starscream himself. in any continuity starscream is guaranteed a degree of...difficulty, integrating with other robots.
if we utilize the TFA model of his personality, his main components are cowardice, sycophancy, egomania, and being a big fat liar. and being a competent female bot but that's besides the point TFP seems to prioritize himself over all others, as that is the way he has been conditioned to survive over the past X-million years. suck up to the most powerful thing and don't stick your neck out for anybody else.

the autobots would have to reeeaaaallllyyy give him enough benefit of the doubt so he wouldn't feel like a prisoner/powerless, but keep enough of an eye on him to make sure he doesn't backstab them, which is a very real possibility. it would take a level of mistreatment from the decepticons so abhorrent, so intolerable, that staying with these hig-and-mighty goody-goody autobots would be preferable to him.

i don't know how doable that is in Prime, but i think it could be pulled off in the future...

They both did this to eachother at various points. Sometimes it would be Starscream who does it because he wanted the glory. Sometimes it would be Megatron who was too drunk on his power to actually care about the long term consequences.

I only watched the first few episodes of G1 but Starscream seemed like a bitch who always wanted to run when they should have fought, and fight when they should've run. It was even his fault the Autobots woke up in the first place.

Starscream is held back primarily by three things:
1) His cowardice. It's impossible for him to earn any respect.
2) He's a little TOO opportunistic. Despite his normal cowardice, his immediate response whenever he sees the tiniest opportunity to be leader is to immediately take it without so much as pausing to consider whether this is really the right time. Time and time again, Megatron just disappears for half a second and Starscream immediately goes "HE'S DEAD, I CALL DIBS ON THE LEADERSHIP POSITION".
3) He's too weak. It's impossible for him to keep all the Decepticons in line.
