Because of this. People watched the second and third rate shit because it was on and they had time to kill. If you go to their parent company's website, Nelvana is still listed as one of their brands. I point that out because they shuttered a bunch of channels over the same weekend and those have been removed from that list.

Odds are the company hasn't been closed, but the production people have been fired. The reality is that this company hasn't had a big hit in a long ass time. They've been coasting off of doing licensing deals for other companies and stuff they made decades ago.

Odds are they don't have much of a real archive (beyond tapes of their shows) anymore either. Nelvana used to have its own office in Toronto, but for the last 15 years it's been operated out of the same building its parent company is based out of. When companies move offices, things get junked. I know they were selling off a bunch of cells.

If you aren't a leaf, it's impossible to understand just how all-encompassing Nelvana was for animation in this country. They had a massive library of shows, many of which were excellent and childhood-defining, across all major networks, and put a ton of effort into their work. Material like the TinTin, Babar, and Pippi Longstocking adaptations were fantastic, as was their take on Redwall. Their original shows like Clone High, My Dad the Rockstar, and Ned's Newt were great, too. Hell, they even did some really good work with Japanese studios on Bakugan and Pecola. And Rock & Rule's a classic!

A shame that they, like the entire Canadian entertainment industry, crumbled under the weight of the country's failures (to say nothing of the greater western animation industry's collapse). They'll be missed.

Richard Scarry was animated by Cinar, which then rebranded to Cookie Jar before being bought out by DHX, which rebranded as WildBrain.
Also, FOP wasn't animated by Nelvana, but they did own the international distribution rights for the show's first five seasons, which is why it aired on non-Nickelodeon channels like Disney Channel or Jetix in foreign countries.

As someone born in 1997, I've really noticed how a third of the cartoons I watched during childhood was produced by them.

It's kind of sad to see them go. Rock & Rule, The Devil & Daniel Mouse, Beetlejuice, Sam & Max, Cyberchase, and The Backyardigans really held up so well.

People will say politics, but realistically North American animation is way too kid centric and the projects that aren't movies tend to be low effort and low quality. It was pretty much doomed when anime became mainstream in the states and kids started to spend their time doing other things instead.

I don't care for the Liberals at all, but Conservatives make them look enlightened in comparison. On topic, Stephen Harper was the one that first started making significant cuts to Canadian cultural funds, and you'll notice the decrease in Canadian animation starting in the late 2000's/early 2010's.
