This is a bad thing, because...? Liu Bei was most well known for being a great judge of character. The guys he picks are super talented.

It really is telling that the first time we see him firebend onscreen, Zuko immediately redirects the lightning and throws it back in his face. His first actual act of firebending ends in a loss.

Ozai should've died during the invasion arc, either by Aang or Zuko's hands then Azula gets to takeover as the main bad guy, Everyone is already more invested in her as a villain than her father.

Or Azula kills Ozai herself. The show took her sociopathy in the direction of being the ultimate daddy's girl, and when she lost his approval she fell apart. But she could have just as easily become a complete and absolute cold-blooded monster, willing to sacrifice everything for her ambitions, even her own father.

It would be kind of a fun irony, too, wouldn't it? Ozai thought Zuko was useless and put all his chips on Azula. But in the end it would be Zuko who still clung to his father's love, and Azula would be the one to stab her father in the back after he'd come to see her as so dependable.

I can already imagine people saying the show was this or that because it made a girl overthrow him, for example, or how they hyped him only to discard him nonchalantly without even giving him the chance to fight, that sort of thing.

Because this doesn't work for a main villain of a fighting series. Or really of any series. You need to build the guy up for a final confrontation, whatever the confrontation is. "Good judge of character who relies on his subordinate" is the the kind of a leader that in ficiton would only really work as a mentor for the main characters; Zordon style (since you want mostly anything from planning to execution to be done by the heroes themselves).

This should've been it. She poisons him or something and then they find out she's been running the Fire Nation into the ground in the last months of the war. If that would've been the plan from the beginning they would've had time to come up with some other better villain for Aang since Ozai is a compelte non character and it's clear the writers only cared to develop Azula during the entire series.
