Do you have the slightest idea how many books like Dog Man and DOAWK exist yet don't get as much as success as those two?

Not him and OP is incorrect but you have zero fucking idea how many animal comics for kids popped up in the wake of Dog Man's success or prose/graphic novels made in the same style as Diary of a Wimpy Kid to the extent where older characters like Big Nate and G-Man tried it out as well
I largely think a key contributor to their success is that both Pilkey and Kinney just crank out a new book once a year so the momentum never dried up

Two thoughts about this, particularly for books based around visuals:
1) "simpler" art styles are likely more appealing to kid audiences, since its easier for kids to replicate themselves
2) it's easier to have a high rate of output when your rendering style can be done on the quick and plays into imperfections
Anonymous No.150174665
>>150174520 (OP)
Dav Pilkey isn't shitty, he has older work that illustrate it, he's drawing his recent stuff to appeal to young readers, keeping things visually simple for simple stories.
No comment on the other matter.

I think one reason for "shitty" art is that kids like something they know they can copy and draw easily
It was the logic for Kirby and Sonic's designs, not calling them shitty but they wanted something kids would like drawing

Take it from someone who perused through kid lit publishers
The four most successful and influential books for the kid lit graphic novel market are
>Smile
>Dog Man
>Diary of a Wimpy Kid
>The Baby-Sitters Club
Which essentially influenced the four dominant types of books in that market
>Relatable slice of life, usually with coming of age themes
>Animal comedy
>"Diary format" combination of prose and illustration
>Adaptation of older, traditional kid lit novels

>Shitty artist
>Dav and Jeff
It's called an Artstyle and they are great at it. Their art conveys exactly what the story wants, is expressive and unique, and works perfectly for both series.

Bad art isn't "woooah scribbly lines LMAOOOOO!" It's trash anatomy, terrible perspective, awful designs, etc etc.

I'm not going to roast you OP, you're most likely young or baiting. If the former learn to have a good eye for what differentiates good and bad art.

The thing about children's literature is once an artist gets "good" they always end up making boring sci fi action adventure shit with too much lore and too many characters and not enough fun energy.
"Serious literature for BOYS" always features a front cover starring 5 tweens wearing power suits and crossing their arms. No boy wants to read this, they want to read stupid but funny shit like DogMan that's easy to follow, or if they REALLY want something "cool and serious" they're skipping all the western books and walking straight to the manga section.
At least manga will actually have some blood, hell maybe even boobs. Things that boys actually like.

>Sadie has the perfect plan to snag some friends when she transfers to Plainfield Highβ€”pretend to have a peanut allergy. But what happens when you have to hand in that student health form your unsuspecting mom was supposed to fill out? And what if your new friends want to come over and your mom serves them snacks? (Peanut butter sandwich, anyone?) And then there's the bake sale, when your teacher thinks you ate a brownie with peanuts. It's hard to believe there are actually people in this thread defending crap like Dog Man and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The reason shit like this and Captain Underpants sells so well isn't because it's "relatable" or "appeals to kids", it's because of predatory marketing tactics where Scholastic Corporation is allowed to run their "Book Fairs" in public schools and shill this crap to a captive audience of children.
