Nothing in the remarkably limited advertising generated any kind of attention to be paid.

The premise wasn't enough, there needed to be more of a hook than just another fish out of water bluffing their way through a chaotic scenario. Especially when you did the most literal example of that 4 years prior.

I feel like the problem with animated films for a long time now has been the lack of a clear, direct, undeniable antagonist that isn't just the consequences of the characters actions or misunderstood.

Shit, when's the last time we had an unambiguous bad guy?

Who gives a flying fuck? It's a massive downgrade from golden age Pixar, their newer films feel more like they're made for kids rather than being made for everyone, with their child protagonists and sappy lessons for children and shit. Maybe if I had higher expectations for Pixar I'd actually give it a shot.

Also fuck the beanmouth GrubHub style I'm glad this shitty film caused normies to turn against it.

This is what interests me most of all. One of the biggest advantages of 2000s pixar was that it wasn't afraid to make the films about adults who weren't where they wanted to be in life.
Even Finding Nemo was mostly about a struggling single father. Ratatouille was about a greenhorn trying to make it before he really had the experience or resume. Like, all of them were about adults and the sides of ourselves we hide from kids because we want them to feel like everything is okay, making the movies as much for parents as they were for kids

almost all of famous pixar films are about a metaphorical or literal father figure. Toy Story, Up, Monsters Inc,,
the modern good one, inside out, has a metaphorical mother figure because they figured out what girls are. it is a proven formula so the kid enjoys the pretty scenes and the parent relates to it because parenthood makes you a boring person who can only think of their offspring

this is why wreck it ralph 1 gave everyone pixar vibes, metaphorical dad metaphorical mid life crisis.

That and "What if Videogame characters had feelings"/"Toy Story but with videogame characters," or how Ralph's character arc is about learning that being the bad guy of his game does not mean he is a bad person and he can be a positive influence to others instead of the typical "follow your dreams" Disney story.

Then I heard it was rewriten to remove so much gay stuff in it. So I'm like, yeah, no, that's not for regular straight normie like me. Some niche 1% of the poppulation would probably like it.

What the hell are you talking about? I'm saying a movie can have a bad guy who's just a bad guy, and doesn't always have to be a concept or aspect of life antagonistic to the character like a lot of the more recent Pixar movies have had.

Onward - A ticking clock scenario with challenges

Soul - Guy died and was cheating the system to get a second chance at life, person who enforces the rules does his job

Luca - Fish Man Racism

Turning Red - Puberty and Generational Trauma

Lightyear - Almost but not quite because the enemy was fucking Buzz abusing time travel to an absurd degree and not just EVIL EMPEROR ZURG being an evil emperor.

Elemental - Racism again but this time they're literally fire and water.

Inside Out 2 - Puberty, AGAIN. THAT'S TOO MANY TIMES TO TREAD THAT SAME ROAD, PIXAR!

Elio - Alright so you have Lord Grigon, guy puts skulls in amber to show them off, absolute warlord status, denied entry into the big interplanetary government for being a goddamn warlord and... Because of Warrior Honor and fixing his relationship to his son, he's allowed into the space government...

Man come on, it would've been better if it was a bunch of peaceful aliens learning to defend themselves from the bad- Oh god I just wanted Space Seven Samurai, that's all I wanted. It would've been A Bug's Life again but it's a human giving a bunch of silly space alien politicians a spine.

I don't like the design of Elio's eyepatch, and for some reason that's my main sticking point.
The color is too saturated, it fits too closely around his eye, and it doesn't have any external support besides a very thin band of adhesive on the edge.
I get why they designed it this way: it's colorful so it's not too medical or pirate-like, and it's just around the eye to let show expression, but it reads like an adhesive pad stuck directly to his eyelid, rather than the skin around it, which would be very uncomfortable.
It's also just about the most saturated thing in the frame, more prominent than his actual eye.

The budget for Elio was more than the box office haul and budget for The Bad Guys 2 combined. Not minus, combined. And yet visually it's one of the most mid looking movie Pixar has ever made. The visuals and premise did not click with audiences. It died at the box office with only $153 million while Bad Guys 2, which had a bungled world wide release and poor marketing, is on its way to $200 million on a budget less than a third of Elio's. If Elio had a budget of $70 mollion ot would have been a sleeper hit but it just did not have the broad appeal to be a tentpole.

>Elio and his aunt are in a military base
>Then this happens
Imagine a movie that starts with an annoying gay kid. You roll your eyes, the progs get a boner. The gay kid then meets an alien and reaches out to it. Only to be exploded on screen and have it's flaming screaming skull fly offscreen. Then the movie is about the invasion of Earth from the aliens' perspective. At first they're winning, then the humans start trying to communicate using battlefield recordings of the aliens and what they have analyzed of their language. To the aliens it sounds like the humans are mocking them at best. At worst they unnerve them because it sounds like the humans are trying to lure them in the open by replaying the cries of wounded aliens. Then as the weeks pass, human scientists manage to discover how to make the alien weapons fire. We mount them to our vehicles and for special antialien units. To us we have jurryrigged the best weapons we have for use against an invading force. To them we have dismembered their dead comrades and have mounted them on our warmachines. We are ghoulish.
As more of them die, the human arsenal increases. The aliens are forced to consolidate to a single force and establish a fortress. First they do it to hold out until reinforcements arrive. Then to buy time. The aliens realize that they have encountered a nightmare species that consumes and assimilates. They must destroy all their tech and databases to keep us from getting any stronger. Then the aliens receive some disasterous news. The humans managed to capture an alien transport.

cont.
The taskforce succeeds on it's mission, but it learns that in their absence, the humans stormed and captured the fortress. The taskforce is the last aliens alive on the planet. An alien makes a terrifying realization. If we have captured their databases then eventually we will have their homeworld's location. The taskforce leader rallies his troopers and he gives them an ominous speech. Then they go on a suicide mission to storm the captured fortress and destroy the databases. The humans narrowly stop them but a fatally wounded alien sets off an explosive device, completing his mission. This leaves only one lone alien alive somewhere on Earth. The movie ends with an alien scout receiving a desperate communication. "Do not come here! This is hell! Do not come here! This is hell! Do no-"
The scout decides to investigate, implying that the humans will be getting a second chance at acquiring the means for space travel.

About 10 minutes into the film Elio gets hit in the eye leaving it red and swollen, and he wears the eyepatch for the next like hour of the film.
It was kind of a poor decision really, they should've just had his eye be red and swollen for the next few scenes and then have his eye go back to normal again. The eyepatch is there for too much of the film's runtime, it's distracting.

Let's go over it and see if you're right.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish drops Dec 2022 so let's look at American produced feature length films released in theaters since then.

Also Released in 2022: "Strange World" - Antagonist is mankind's general ignorance of their surroundings and the balance of nature" Turning Red - Antagonist is misunderstanding a magic superpower as a curse. "Minions: Rise of Gru" - Entire team of villains, The Vicious 6. (movie made back nearly 10x it's budget) "The Bad Guys" - Antagonist is secret reveal villain with a wacky but effective plan. "DC League of Super-pets" - A super powered, hyper intelligent guinea pig. "Lightyear" - The villain is stubbornness taken to an absurd degree

2023 you've got "Elemental" - Racism. "Paw Patrol Movie" - According to the summary sounds like it had actual supervillains. "Across the Spider-verse" - Joke Villain turned legit threat. "Super Mario Bros Movie" - Motherfuckin' Bowser with a surprisingly fantastic showing. "TMNT Mutant Mayhem" - Mutants Mayheming all over the place. "Trolls Band Together" - Using stolen magic to make yourself popular and famous... Pretty villain-y I guess. "Wish" - King Magnifico's a pretty classic sounding Disney Asshole... still didn't watch this movie though. And "Migration"- Pretty much everything that ever wanted to eat a duck down to one chef who kinda goes Elmer Fudd overboard about it.

2024 "The Day The Earth Blew Up" Twist Villain, guy's still kind of an asshole though. "Despicable Me 4" Cockroach Man, turns people into cockcroaches... Pretty damn evil but I don't remember even seeing him in the advertising of the movie (which also ended up almost making 10 times its budget these movies are crack to somebody) "The Garfield Movie" - Abandonment issues and a criminal cat. "Inside Out 2" I mean as much as anbody's sense of anxiety is an antagonist. "Kung Fu Panda 4" - Bad Writing and a magic lizard villain... But mostly Bad Writing. "Moana 2" - Unambiguously antagonistic deity. "Piece by Piece" - animated documentary. "Transformers One" Double Twist Villains (one obvious) pretty damn effective flick. "The Wild Robot" - Corporate Synergy armed with laser guns, not memorable but fairly villainous.

Objectively better. If Olga were his mom the audience would've just seen her as a bad mom, while as an aunt her confusion is justified.
>Elio wants to get abducted instead of being afraid of it
More interesting of a premise.

This one is more questionable without knowing the full context but in theory it's a good change too.

This cope is literally one that AI genners use. It doesn't even make sense because nobody is worried about beanmouth putting them out of a job because it's too powerful and they can't figure out how to copy it, they hate it because when the animation industry gets creatively stagnant it means less animation. It's not like Pixar did a survey and discovered that this is the direction people want them to go in, they went in that direction because the new hires all only know how to draw beanmouth because they never studied anatomy properly, and recent initiatives at Pixar were pushing "culturally authentic" autobiographical movies made by these people instead of blockbusters.

The aggravating thing about this trend is that Coco wasn't like this at all. It had the classic Pixar visual style and it was even a movie about an ethnic holiday that is obscure to people outside of Mexico and it managed to make it feel compelling and important to the viewer. And after that they switched to beanmouth becuase it's easier for the concept artists and storyboarders (the people who are basically steering the ship) to draw, because it's all they know.

I think after Elio Disney and Pixar are going to finally realize that the life stories of animators just aren't that interesting even if you try to add a high concept twist. If you want to tell the world the story of how you ended up at animation school, save it for your interview on the Blu-Ray special features. Their art looks like shit because they're all copying each other's homework instead of studying and learning from the masters. These people are competent enough to work in the industry but many of them need to be re-trained in some capacity, and they need to either poach some senior management from the competition or bring somebody out of retirement, because the current leadership pipeline is like a high school junior trying to teach the freshman class.

You fags need to see the bigger picture, I'm basically repeating what I've said in another thread, but:

The beanmouth style represents how much executives fuck over projects and how little creative freedom they give to creators these days, tons of beanmouth characters had more unique designs in concept art, Elio, Wylde Pak, but they were beanmouthed in the final product cause executives see that shitty style as "appealing". It's just one big part of a bigger issue about how executive controlled animation is these days, slop like Stugo and Haileys On It are only made to cash in on the success of prior shows (beanmouth loreshit from the 2010's) by having premises similar to them. Funnily enough, it isn't working anymore, Elio has caused people to hate on beanmouth and no adults wanna willingly watch shit like Stugo or BCG cause of how oversanitized and babyish kids tv is these days.

Here's a character designers perspective on beanmouth that sheds a light on the issues with the style.

Also that Adam Ellis comic is retarded, just because regular people draw like shit don't mean big studios have to draw like shit too, they're supposed to present examples on how to make shit look appealing, duh.

I think the problem is variety. A story that cribs from personal experience that is intended to be relatable is probably fine if it gets sandwiched between stories with classic villains or whatever but if you keep turning out relatable story after relatable story people will get tired of it.

Transformers itself is doing fine (Hasbro's fuckwittery notwithstanding), it's just because of how rarely a Transformers game comes out that people were getting excited. It being live-service definitely killed a lot of the hype though. Someone just needs to put up the cash and sort out the rights issues for High Moon games.

Your film had awful character designs. The humans looked awful, a vast majority of the aliens looked like formless non-mammalian blobs, and the main villain (the only character with a semblance of good design) looked like a Cragmite if it were designed by Fisher-Price.

You're not getting an animation degree without anatomical studies.
>but the Richard Williams image macro!
The anecdote was about high schoolers and the examples are the personal projects of Fine Art majors rather than animation graduates. Beanmouth is everywhere because a few years ago there were several successful shows that used what could be, with a stretch, all lumped into "beanmouth" and production companies are both trend-chasing and behind the times and demand the animators use that particular style while also demanding it be streamlined and simplified as much as possible to cut costs.
