Nah. Stalin "modernized" Russia just barely enough to defeat the Nazis at an insane cost in lives and infrastructure. Even then he had to have help from Uncle Sam or the USSR would have been defeated. As it was the damage wrought by his purges was an infected wound that never healed, leading to the death of the Soviet Union before the end of the century.

Mao's antics were just as bad but after his death China was smart enough to dump the Gang of Four and put Deng in charge afterwards. Seeing the Soviet stagnation he decided to swap out communism with a more or less capitalist economy while maintaining the dictatorship of the CCP. Some say Gorbachev should have tried to do the same in Russia - perestroika without the glasnost - but I personally believe the USSR was too far gone by then. Between the two Stalin killed more people than Hitler, albeit more slowly, and you really can't murder that many of your own people without putting your nation on the road to extinction.
