You know, I saw some people wondering how exactly they were going to fit all of Act 1 into the pilot episode, especially since it's only 11 minutes long.

But then I actually went and re-read Act 1 today.

Lets list all the actually relevant things that need to be covered in Act 1, up until the Cruxstruder is activated.

Act 1: Part 1 - John fucks around in his room

Act 1: Part 2 - John fucks around downstairs

After this, the entire rest of Act 1 (the rest of Part 3 and all of Parts 4 and 5) takes place over the course of 4 minutes and 20 seconds.

If we assume that the animated series will actually stick to that time limit, the question is not "Can we do all of Act 1 in 11 minutes".
But rather "Can we do all the important plot beats of the first half of Act 1 in 7 minutes".

As a side note, despite how short it is a LOT of Act 1 is taken up by John 'observing' various objects in his house (posters, fireplace, harlequins, cakes, etc), solving puzzles and going on a bunch of random, meaningless tangents that don't go anywhere.

These things don't really serve any real narrative or characterization purpose and are mainly there as a result of Act 1 being back when Homestuck was still being treated as a CYOA comic imitating a point-and-click adventure game. Thus they can be either cut or turned into visual background details that we don't waste time on.

TLDR: Barely fucking anything even happens in Act 1. It's just John dicking around for an hour with 10 minutes of actual plot relevant stuff.

One of the benefits of them shifting from typed chat logs to spoken dialogue is that characters can talk and act at the same time, which saves on time.

A lot of the time spent in Act 1 is going back and forth between characters actually doing things and then returning to the computer/PDA for text chats. This problem doesn't exist with spoken dialogue/voice chat, which the trailer seems to indicate is what they're doing in the animated pilot.

Blood is connections, friendship, bonds (probably literal too like chemical bonds), stuff like that. Karkat is the Knight of Blood, basically weaponizing friendship. Basically being a leader, he was able to unify his team and even in current day Candy he is the best leader for the world. Kankri on the other hand (more specifically the Signless) is the Seer of Blood, he sees the faults in society and in Signless' case he saw visions of his counterpart's life.
Life is, well, life, energy, fertility but also optimism and potential. We don't have the best examples of Life since all our examples either don't do anything or have to do with the lack of life. Meenah/Condy of course takes life, both in the sense of her society but also literally stealing it to make herself or her pawns live longer but she also stole Nanna's potential (Nanna says so). Something similar happens with Jane, who is raised by Condy to be an heiress, removing her self-actualization. Jane sees her own role of Maid of Life (someone who serves their aspects goal) within that crocker empire role as "I have to make a bunch of babies". Feferi doesn't do much so uhhh moving on
Doom is.. uhhh... well... it's the opposite of Life, that's for sure. It's,.. green. Yeah, we only have two examples and neither of them do shit. But based on Life we can make some assumptions. Where Life is optimism, Doom is pessimism. I think there's some fate aspect to it, with Sollux being tied to the inevitability of destruction through sgrub plus his own tendency to hear ghosts (his Mage of Doom role). Ultimately we don't know much. Though this will probably change soon with Act 2 of HSBC having started and one of the kids presumably being a Doom player (my guess is Tavvy being the Bard of Doom)

There's something to be said about the need for pretense when it comes to Homestuck's 'magical powers'. In a pesterlog with Rose, Doc Scratch touches on this when discussing her magic powers.

But think about how many times you've read one of the alchemizing pages and went "Oh huh, yeah, that make sense" when John makes a telekinesis ghost gauntlet out of some ectoplasm, his PDA and a fake arm. That's the whole conceit.

Though I could also see Season 1 ending with the finale of Act 3 if they decided to take their time, but I think they'll want to end the season AFTER properly introducing the audience to the Trolls and all that stuff, which happens in Act 4.

Not sure what they'll do for future seasons/acts though, Act 5 and 6 are both just so much longer than the opening acts.
