The Simpsons had been so bad for a long time that it was... alright. It was also just a callback to other episodes, like the rest of the whole movie. Sitting in the theater opening night, it was good enough for a chuckle, and that's fine.

The movie made me realize that the show has become incredibly preachy and that the writers love inserting their obnoxious views through marge and lisa

seasons 1-10 have carried the shows good will for decades to the point where the show is now too big to fail even though it hasn't been good in a really really long time.

I was fresh out of high school when it came out, stopped watching new Simpsons somewhere around early 2003 due to it hitting rock bottom and this was a fresh breath of air. Saw it with dad, uncles and cousins we all laughed like crazy. Then saw it alone when it was on DVD and got a few chuckles. Didn't hold up as much by myself.

Same with Spongebob, really. One of those cultural touchdown shows everyone only remembers for the first few good seasons, but after a certain point any reference to later material just draws a blank.
