Its a fantastic case of mismanagement. The idea that they didn't jump on things to at least put out a blatant cash-grab movie at the height of their popularity really is baffling. They could have easily done a franchise of films, or a show, or something. Instead they took the esports pill and threw all of their money at something that people not only didn't like all that much, but which baited them into making their game worse.
One of the many strengths of early Overwatch was that there were characters that fit all skill levels. You could put your little brother in on Lucio and yeah he might not be the best player in the world but all he has to do is follow the group and mash his buttons sometimes and he's still contributing to the team. But as Overwatch League took over, it became less about fun and different skillsets and more about "How can we completely redesign this character so that people who have monster energy drink for blood and illegally take adderal for the speed boost can maximize their twitch reflexes for epic gamer moments?" Which just makes everyone play the same over time and ruins characters that people liked in their earlier forms.
Oh, early Symmetra. I will miss the times we shared together, dancing around slow turning tanks and melting them with our dinky microwave lockon gun. Our love was not optimal or skill based, but it sure was hilarious.
