That's the thing though there never was an era where female characters were only allowed to be GIRLY and WOMANLY. In the late 19th century there was a whole genre of novels about young girls experiencing and doing interesting stuff on their way to adulthood in Germany called Backfischromane. Most fairytales even have a female protagonist. The same goes for cartoons. Especially if you look at the stuff produced in the 80s and beyond.
