It has a certain visual appeal that digital can't easily replicate, and it'll most likely never be used by a major studio again. If zoomers want to bring the style back then good on them.

>subtle shadows from the cels being physically placed on top of each other

Why are you /co/tards all so negative all the damn time? It's not the best attempt at replicating earlier Simpsons or SpongeBob that I've seen but for what it is it's pretty neat. They even got the loose and expressive drawings right, I feel like one issue many attempts to replicate season one cel animated SpongeBob online that I've seen is that they always forget that early seasons SB wasn't always on-model and had plenty of loose drawings and wacky expressions, this video actually got that detail right.

I feel like 90% of /co/ posters never picked up a pencil in their damn life.

That's just low DPI printing. Just like everything people say about cel animation colours stemming from old cameras used to capture the cels. This was never how the artist wanted their work to look
Anonymous No.150227894

The real thing is a labor intensive process and I'm pretty sure animation cels aren't manufactured on the same scale as they used to be. For example, Ed Edd n Eddy kept going with cels until the supplier for Dan's studio went out of business.
The "look" can clearly be imitated though, though you'll probably not see it used in mainstream cartoons as production budgets are already squeezed thin as it is.

Same reason we like CRT shit or VHS now. Half of us wasn't raised with it and the low fidelity that comes with either is something new compared to an era of lossless HD animation while the other half of us was raised with it and are nostalgic for it. You also find that colours are more muted and the outlines blend into the scene more with drawn cel animation, and due to it being labour intensive the way cell animation is directed scene to scene is different from digital. It's subtle, but it's enough for some autists to latch onto and fixate on as a preference. If I recall correctly there is a scene right now collecting old DVDs and VHS copies of cartoons as new studio re-releases are starting to "upscale" old cartoon seasons instead of the original cel look now.
Anonymous No.150229329
I can't tell if that Gundam Wing anniversary short was cel animated or not, but if they can replicate it to that degree with processing now, I'd bet other studios are looking into bringing back the aesthetic.
Anonymous No.150230102 >>150234722

EEnE only switched to digital in the first place because the company supplying their paints for cel animation went out of business, so they really tried their hardest to emulate the look of the older seasons. The show was definitely starting to run out of gas by then and I'm glad it ended when it did, but the animators were still firing on all cylinders.

surely you could just make closed models only trained on specific data to undo the whole "ai incest" problem, though?
Anonymous No.150239790
>>150238992
No, because all current AI models are trained off the same base dataset to function. You need way, WAY more data than any one company could possible own for these things to work at all. Not even Disney has enough content for it. AI incest is inevitable, especially when so much of the internet keeps getting flooded with slop and it's now impossible to filter out the clean data.

Also a fundamental reason AI is incompatible with AI is because animation values consistency, something AI models are both notoriously terrible at and have never shown any signs of improving.

the only way to truly replicate it in digital would be to do the backgrounds in the traditional way, digitize them and just animate the characters over them in digital. if you want the "shadow" the paints of the cel would cast they can try but I'm sure that the main appeal is that the backgrounds are made of oil or watercolors in a real canvas and not fancy brushes in an app
Anonymous No.150260535
>>150258971
I'm not talking about the characters, I'm talking about the backgrounds. I don't know if you know this, anon, but the backgrounds in Spongebob have line art on them. They have those squiggly, uneven lines that denote the forms on background elements to make them stand out from each other. They don't animate these backgrounds most of the time so they only ever have to draw the line art once per shot.
