I miss when Simpsons had occasional moments of exaggerated animation
The Disney acting in the newer seasons is lame, since NuSimpsons has a higher budget they should just animate like this.

I miss both that and how dynamic/cinematic both the lighting and camera angles could be. There were moments where it could feel like an actual animated movie, even if it only lasted a few seconds. The zoom-out before Homer strangles Burns in part 1 of Who Shot Mr. Burns always stood out to me as combining all three of those elements.

They lost their (slave)cheap labor and things got too costly to make anymore, it's why the new KotH isn't as well made too.

That's where all the issues hit, for about 30ish year the global world had a functioning under class they could feed peanuts and get spectacular results.

They can't *just* animate like that. The show only exists to make profit for Disney, so it will never have good animation again. Good animation doesn't come from nowhere. Give credit to David Silverman for his work

The Simpsons doesn't have a low budget these days like other shows, far from it in fact, it has a high budget these days cause of how profitable it is, the animation was stiff as fuck for like most of the show but then when Disney bought them they started including Disney acting in the episodes, no other show includes Disney acting, it's the same reason NuSB is the only show with Ren & Stimpy animation, and these longrunners are still animated by Rough Draft Korea unlike most newer shows. They aren't giving those kinds of budgets to stuff like NuKOTH cause companies are too afraid to take risks these days.

In the earlier seasons Groening wanted pushed expressions and cartoony movements to be at the absolute minimum, there's a good video going over this called the Simpsons "no no sheets" or something like that. The older seasons looked far more visually appealing, but I guess even the occasional expressions were too much.

Some Enchanted Evening was originally gonna be the first Simpsons episode to air but it was delayed because what the overseas studio sent over was deemed too cartoony by Groening, this one scene is the only smoothly animated remnant of the original version.

The Simpsons was a fucking mistake cause it paved the way for shows like Phineas & Ferb and Gravity Falls that have zero wacky expressions or cartoony movements.

that is still mostly the case, it's the same on Family Guy as well. if you saw good hand drawn animation on Simpsons, it was usually David Silverman. he was animating the characters with Brad Bird, Bill Kopp, Wes Archer (correct me if im wrong, this is from memory) and some others when it was on the Tracy Ullman show

Something I've found interesting
The 60s Hanna-Barbera shows or some of the Terrytoons were made on a quarter of the budget of even NuKOTH, but they have much more entertaining and appealing poses, expressions, etc
NuKOTH might be a bad example as it wasn't intended to be a cartoony show, so maybe Simps or FG are better examples
FG looks cheap and stiff as hell but I would personally blame the boarders and layout artists over the Korean slaves for not pushing for better poses in the production phase

Well they cheated quite a bit by heavily reusing old animations. It's like how in Scooby Doo, whenever there was a running sequence, they ALWAYS reused the same animations. Every HB show had heavily recycled animations and backgrounds. This is why they were occasionally able to use slightly more dynamic animations and shit. They saved so much time and money via recycling old shit that they were sometimes able to do slightly interesting things as well. And then if the opportunity came up, they'd reuse that too.

most of the animation in the Golden Age of animation in the 50s and 60s were much cheaper once UPA won over the industry with its limited animation skills, which compared to Disney, WB and MGM (the latter was already closing its doors later on in the 50s), leaving expressive animation to be obsolete by that point. Even studios like Famous (including Harveytoons, best known for their Casper shorts), Terrytoons and the newly-formed H-B were dipping their toes to limited animation to cut their budget.

This is like what animation is right now from 2010s onward where your standard animation has to be done cheaper in Flash and outsourced in Korean territories. It's not just Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, American Dad or hell, Nu-KoTH even (despite the latter still having to have flash based from the previous, now defunct studio from the previous season). I mean, shit like Bento Box is a studio done way too stiff and cheaply for their adult animated shows and their pays aren't really that decent

Groening used to care about the artistic side of The Simpsons, the earlier seasons were aiming for a more stylized look with their backgrounds and mildly wacky animation, but as time went on the artistic side of the Simpsons became a bit more of an afterthought, and this would continue to be the case with Groenings other works like Futurama.

Now the Simpsons is the biggest thing from that era people remember so they're going back and after so many years of mediocre animation they're seeing these scenes and going "holy fuck this was actually pretty neat".

Retard, the most popular cartoons of this decade are based on preexisting IPs, original IPs are left to dry, 90% of cartoons are cheap shit like beanmouth junk and Family Guy ripoffs, many animators can’t find jobs and are treated like shit, cartoons are oversanitized and executives are barely giving creators any artistic freedom, all new shows are dropping dead after one season, streaming is visibly damaging cartoons, this is worst moment in animation history in the 80’s.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brad_Bird
>Bird's cinematic sense of visual storytelling with Family Dog was uncommon in television animation to that point, mainly due to budgetary restrictions. Most television productions retained rudimentary cinematography, with frequent abuse of standard close-ups, medium angles, and establishing shots to move the story along. In contrast, Bird favored using more filmic techniques, using extreme angles, long panning shots, quick camera cuts, pushed perspective, and so on. Bird's work on Family Dog caught the eye of producers James L. Brooks and Sam Simon, who with Matt Groening were developing The Simpsons, the first prime time animated sitcom in decades for Fox. In 1989, Bird was invited to join Klasky Csupo (and later Film Roman), where he served as "executive consultant" for the show. The role required Bird oversee the script-to-animation pipeline 2–3 days per week;[8] the first episode produced on which Bird received credit (save for the reworked cut of the pilot episode "Some Enchanted Evening") was "There's No Disgrace Like Home".

One of the reasons why The Simpsons looked the way it did it because it was overseen by a guy that had a film and disney background. Even though animation on TV is limited, they found practical ways to make it hit harder.
