>The contemporary comics milleu feels strange to me
DC full rebooted in 2011 and has done major retcons and partial reboots SEVERAL times since then. They effectively have no continuity anymore.
Marvel just flagrantly ignores their continuity and history now and has been doing so for over a decade. Disney buying them was the worst thing that ever happened to the company.
IDW became a major player in the 2010s by grabbing up every license they could get their hands on. They have since lost almost all of them and are completely irrelevant now.
Dark Horse lost most of their licenses and are now a glorified manga publisher with a handful of Western creator-owned titles.
Image has become the main publisher of licensed titles, which are now their big thing.
Indies in general exist almost exclusively to publish licensed comics and wannabe screenwriters' film/netflix pitches.
That's the state of comics now. Needless to say, sales are BY FAR the lowest they've EVER been.
