All of the 1980s GI Joe characters who had toys were created by Hasbro's design team, with the lone exception of the Baroness, who was created by the people working on the comic, and later got a toy.

Larry Hama, who wrote almost all of the original Marvel run of the comics, also wrote the filecards for the toys, but he didn't actually create Snake Eyes or any of the other 80s Joes. Eventually some of his comic OCs got toys much later in the line's history. Nothing in the original Snake Eyes toy filecard hinted at him being a ninja, it seems to be something Hama came up with in the second year of the comic, to give him a rivalry with Storm Shadow, the first toy who was explicitly a ninja.

There was almost certainly a Japanese version made, but it just went unreleased. The English dub's credits have Japanese audio engineers and studios listed which makes no sense when 4Kids produced their own OST and effects in-house.

The English dub isn’t very good thanks to 4kids translation. Constant censoring the violence and death, recoloring weapons, flamethrowers now shoot blue fire instead of red. And 4kids annoying original soundtrack that replaces the shows actual soundtrack.

I havent read any of the comics but I love it so much and they seamlessly make Jynx a strong character just by having her work with Snake Eyes no one has to call attention to it and it works. How do you know this? Are there foreign dubs of this show based on the Japanese footage? I think Italy used to do that a lot.

I remember reading that was an alternate English dub of Sigma 6 produced by Voicebox in Vancouver, but I've never seen that substantiated. Hasbro had them do the CG GI Joe DTVs of the era.

During Retaliation's opening weekend, a sequel was greenlit, but they wasted the rest of the decade trying to come up with something that they could also launch a 'Hasbro Cinematic Universe' out of, featuring various other non-Transformers properties. In the end they just gave up and rebooted with a Snake Eyes movie nobody saw because it got thrown out to die during covid.

The Cobra scenes in Retaliation were as much fun as the ninja scenes.
