They both work well as cool pulp characters. The issue is that MOTU has shockingly little good fiction and it's never transcended the toy business the way Transformers and G.I. Joe did. A lot of fans of the Hama comics never touched the figures and don't even necessarily care about the cartoon. Transformers is an actual IP juggernaut: the toys barely matter.

I think some of the more recent DC comics and Revolution were pretty good, but MOTU never hit escape velocity. So Skeletor remains wacky 1980s meme-fuel.

Resolute trying in that one scene to pretend like it's a sequel to any previous GI Joe cartoons when it's obviously it's own new thing was just a bad idea in the first place. Giving Cobra Commander a whole "I was only pretending to be retarded" speech when you're trying to present him as a serious, threatening villain was just bizarre.
