Ellis and Scorsese were known for playing with genre conventions. One known for his WB mob revival and the other for pulp in Planetary, both of which do a lot with the genre. But when it comes to something creative like Castlevania and Infernal Affairs, both Asian, they immediately become ignorant racists. And they think they're above the material and come up with trashy OC crap. It's even worse in Ellis' case, because he was the writer. Since Scorsese had to film the script and the creative input wasn't entirely his. Even without that arrogant stance, you have both a terrible faux anime and a crappy Serial.

I love Castlevania but never cared that much about the show either way. I don't understand being outraged over any of it. I never excused it or said otherwise. I just said I don't really care that much about it. In my view the series shouldn't even really exist. The best way of adapting Castlevania would be as an episodic atmospheric action show (think Monster Mash as interpreted by Tartakovsky or Kawajiri) since there's not enough meat on the bones for much else.

That kind of production would have been too expensive and antithetical to the streaming model though, so it was never on the table.

For a while now, I noticed that a lot of shows feel like they are designed to be cut into context free clips that are shared in social media like YouTube. Watching the show itself makes it worse because it feels like these scenes have some sort of amnesia where they pointlessly repeat something covered in a previous scene or actively contradict a previous scene. The dialogue is also terrible often not having any room for interpretation at the cost of sounding unnatural.
