Are there any western animated films or series that are actually high IQ? I mean Evangelion and Yoshitoshi Abe-tier narrative depth. Most western animations seem to be entirely concerned with comedy or action. That's why most of it isn't that pretty to look at. Comedies like the Simpsons and Family Guy don't even go for beauty. Super-hero cartoons may have some cool city-scapes but nothing approaching Ghibli or Shinkai landscapes.

The only smart western animation I can think of is frenchie stuff like the Triplets of Belleville but even that is more pretentious than profound.

Evangelion feels like one of those things that people say is "deep" not because they can actually quantify it in their own words, but because they're just simply parroting what other people told them to say, who in turn are also just parroting jargon from other people in an infinite cycle.

Watchmen is the closest thing we got to Evangelion in comics. The ambiance is very similar.

It's impossible to write highly intelligent stories unless you yourself are already highly intelligent, AND you are also very well-read, AND you are also skilled and practiced at writing thoughtfully with depth.

It's impossible to even write a highly intelligent character in a regular story if you aren't highly intelligent yourself. Because you have no idea how they'd think. So you just wind up writing what sounds smart to you, which probably isn't.

Guess how bright the typical writer for western animation is. For the most part, they are not exactly among the literati. They probably went to art school, or perhaps film school at best, neither of which are known for their intellectual depth of education.

The exceptions are noteworthy precisely because of how rare they are.

You're right but there's an underlying narrative around Shinji that he isn't participating in which is somewhat novel for a 90s tv show let alone an anime.
It's a violently depressing story a lot like Welcome to the NHK except Evangelion has punchy robot fights instead of an autistic retard making a shitty visual novel and trying to kill himself. It's less that is has any specific message and more that it threw a lot of shit at the wall in an artsy fartsy way and people extrapolated what they wanted out of it. I still like it thoughever.

That was an interview he had with a bunch of grade schoolers where he's speaking in a joking tone which was totally lost in translation. Evangelion's really not that deep at all but I also hate how people take that quote so woefully out of context, Anno was fully aware of what he was doing with some of the symbolism and in other interviews he's overtly stated as much.

Saying Eva isn't deep is just the anime equivalent to saying the Beatles are a terrible band, it's babby's first contrarianism. There's literally no real substantive reason ever brought up for why it isn't deep and it's always met with mass appeal agreeing without stating why, much like how a teenager will tell you the Beatles actually sucked without being to articulate how they're supposedly so terrible. It's a completely safe, easy, and quick way to stroke your own ego while having people happily come out of the woodworks to agree. Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

Evangelion was just Anno traumadumping regarding how fucked the production of Nausicaa was, he's joked about how the symbolism didn't actually mean much outside of wanting to look cool several times. What's funny is that Eva IS actually deep, just not because of Christian symbolism or any bullshit like that. It's a look into a man who was so fucked up from the production of a series he was helping to helm that it made him outright suicidal. The depth of Eva lies in realizing how it's Anno trying to come to terms with his place in the world and how weird the Japanese anime fandom had become in the 90s if you want to include End of Evangelion, there is no depth in the religious symbolism.

NGE is teenage alienation and depression with a mix of shitty parenting played out across the spectacle campiness of the mecha genre. It is not deep, it is blunt. Spectacularly blunt. It is the story of a disaffected and lonely teenage boy surrounded by people incapable or unwilling to provide him with the psychological and emotional support he needs (with an occasional side thread of manipulation) as he struggles with metaphorical suicidal ideation.
