SpongeBob got so popular cause his cartoon managed to strike the perfect balance between standard cartoony stuff and grounded storytelling that people can relate to. He’s earned it.

I do like how SpongeBob is starting to become a timeless cartoon, it’s going up there with Looney Tunes and Tom in Jerry in levels of universal recognizability, keep in mind that Nick still reruns episodes from the golden age so the newer generations can watch them, I agree that nothing can hold a candle to the episodes from the golden age, not even the best modern SB episodes, but that’s the case with other timeless cartoons as well. People in charge of modern Looney Tunes stuff try, but stuff like The Day the Earth Blew Up just can’t compare to greatness of the OG Bob Clampett shorts it was inspired by.
