I think the criticism against Ross is overblown. He's not the only nigga using reference images. But I'm more of the opinion that Ross's work on BIG 2 was used in the wrong way. KC and Marvels are way too pretentious and downplay “traditional” comic book art. Especially KC, who goes “see how old school comics are more artistic,” which is bullshit. They should have hired Mike Allred, Larsen, Mignola, or another true old school artist to represent the golden age.

His illustrations in Marvels make much more sense than in KC or Justice, because of what they were going for in these stories. It's the same issue I have with European "serious" comics; people like to say how much better European art is than in American superhero comics (mostly true), but most of the time they look stiff, too much technique and not enough motion.

Alex Ross' painted art is shit for anything other than a still life stationary portrait drawn from reference. It's too dead and lifeless for anything involving motion or interaction.

His Immortal Hulk covers manage to convey motion pretty well, I think there was something about that time period that made him step up his game. Maybe he was working on Full Circle then and stretching his muscles on pencils was something he hadn't been doing enough.
