DCAU
>Just realized that Kara and Clark in the DCAU are not related at all
Huh..

If I remember correctly there was a mandate at the time which said that Supes HAD to be the last surviving son of Krypton thus Kara had to be made into some other closely related alien

I hate that Supergirl outfit. Should have gone with the classic design from the beginning.

It was going to be another Batman Batgirl thing but Bruce Timm didn't care about Superman anymore to see it through

It wasnt lifted until the 2000s
Though STAS actually did feature a pair of kryptonians acting as zod and faora stand ins, they were just thrown into a black hole at the end of their second appearance to ensure superman stayed the last son of krypton

supergirl in STAS was heavily re-written around the limitations to be kara in-ze rather than kara zor-el, and from technically not krypton in order to fit the mandate
But it ended up being a distinction without difference because they treated her as if she was kara zor-el anyways

Still not as weird as post-crisis supergirl being a clone of lana lang made by good lex luthor from another dimension

You know, this wasn't a bad thing at all in the end, the origin story they cooked out for the spinoff comic is actually the most I've ever enjoyed Supergirl's character. That anual would have made a great movie.

>>150334639
Yup. The second one just looks so much cooler, I don't know why Timm decided to make her look so bland and classless.

I'm almost certain that the guy WAS Zod.

He was an obscure comic villain named jax-ur
But he was turned into zod in all but name, including being a general, and modelled after movie zod

He's Jax-Ur an entirely different Kryptonian criminal, but he was Zod in all but name in STAS.

>>150334975
No the eyepatch midget is Jax-Ur, and actually, there exists an actual Zod in that continuity!

> there was a mandate at the time which said that Supes HAD to be the last surviving son of Krypton
If they're going to give them identical powers and backstories then what was the point?

Not cheapening the death of Superman's homeworld by having a million surviving kryptonians chilling in a bottle I guess.
Anonymous No.150335113 [Report] >>150335160
>>150335075
Editorial thought having so many kryptonians devalued supermans story
Writers thought that the superfamily were interesting additions and loopholed variants of them into the story

They were trying to make her "cool" or something. Like what a 1996 teenager would have put together from stuff in her closet. I do wonder what would have happened with Supergirl if STAS had gotten that full 4th season. I feel like we would have gotten more character development and a more complex relationship with Superman. Maybe we would have seen the classic costume as she matured.
Anonymous No.150335160 [Report] >>150335427
>>150335113
And eventually, editorial was so frustrated over how convoluted Supergirl had become that they gave up and removed the mandate so Kara could be reintroduced properly.

This was also their reasoning for putting Jimmy olsen in a jacket
He had a bowtie and sweatervest in concept art before they decided that the show should be more modern or retrofuturist

Jimmy's design was okay. He hadn't been the Silver Age nerd for quite a while.

By the time supergirl was formally reintroduced, nearly 20 real life years had passed since crisis on infinite earths
So all the people who grew up shocked at supergirls death had grown up and most fans had only lived in a world with discount lana lang supergirl

That was Jax-ur.
He was actually the more prominent Kryptonian villain back in the day, but Zod showing up in Superman 2 let him leapfrog basically the entire rogues gallery.

He never did this. At best it's in an issue of Batman Beyond which Timm had nothing to do with and even there it's only implied.
