Fun fact, this was published in the TV Guide issue that was released the week the movie came out. The higher ups at Marvel were so pissed that something so poorly written got thru the Marvel office and to literally millions of potential new readers that they shit-canned Bob Harras

That's not the comic in TV Guide, Claremont wrote the TV Guide one. That comic is by Lobdell and it was for internet service provider iConnect

This one's the TV Guide comic. Mark Waid was livid about it when being interviewed by Warren Ellis back in the day

They actually had Bendis write that tie-in comic
The corner box on the cover is from a Byrne panel from Spider-Man Chapter One

It's crazy that Loeb made that claim even after they showed USM's Iron Fist and Luke Cage were clearly not the same characters as in EMH

Were they gonna do some clone shit with them later before the Avengers movie was a success and they started aping the MCU then? I don't think so.

When is the point it shits the bed and shows why Harras gets fired? Is that seriously the reason? I thought some of the crash happened under him or is that the real reason and they used this to fire him as a cover story?
So far this seems inoffensive only a little cringey because its just the book saying their names and basic facts which is all a TV general audience needs to get out of a promo for a movie they'll see.

No, Harras didn’t get the EiC job till like the middle of the bankruptcy. From what I remember the TV Guide thing was a contributor, the higher ups saw the X-Men movie as an opportunity to really help their business which, again, at the time was going thru bankruptcy. But the X-Men books that Harras was putting out at the time were incomprehensible to anyone who hadn’t been reading ten different X-books every month for the last ten years and the thing that was supposed to entice new readers, this TV Guide story, was written in the style of a cringey Silver Age comic. Tl;dr Harras dropping the ball hard on bringing in new readers thru the X-Men movie got him shitcanned

To add to this, X-Men was literally Marvel’s first real major movie. You had Blade a couple years prior but that being a hit shocked everyone and Blade was a z-list character that 99% of people didn’t even know was a comic character. This was Marvel’s first real shot to really break into the mainstream

>An evil scientist sets his crosshairs on planet Earth, in search of test subjects for his experiments, transforming even the most timid creatures into vicious fighting machines. Thousands of years later, the Thing, Wolverine, Spider-Man and Elektra all find themselves unwilling participants in the scientist's millennia-old trials...or perhaps not all of them are that unwilling. This unprecedented crossover between Marvel and EA will feature stories that tie-in to what is sure to be one of the top-selling video games of the year!

The crash happened because of people above the EIC. People think DeFalco or Harras were responsible but the truth is that Marvel's owners, as in DeFalco and Harras' bosses during the early 90s, were wanting Marvel to expand and bought out too many things like Fleer/Skybox, Heroes World Distributors, and Malibu Comics.

It's never said exactly why Harras got fired but the claim was usually "not capitalizing on the X-Men film well" or rumors like Jemas preferring Quesada's choices of Bendis and Millar over Harras' choices of Lobdell, Mackie, and someone else from 90s Marvel for Ultimate
