Rick and Morty started off as a show about male characters, but slowly transitioned into being about the female characters. It's literally a tranny show.

'Rick reconciles with his daughters' was the through-line of this season, so it's appropriate that the finale would focus on that. I think because S7 resolved Rick Prime/Evil Morty and had the Fear Hole episode, the writers thought they could get away with putting Morty in the backseat for now lore-wise.

They still gave him that one focus episode with Morty Jr. and three 'classic adventures' (Easter, Cryo, James Gunn), so while I still found S8 unremarkable overall, I respect the writers' efforts to experiment a little more with the series premise. /co/ will disagree, but S3 and S6 have been the best at balancing family development with standalone adventures that are still FUN. Easter, Cryo, and James Gunn just weren't that memorable; THAT'S the problem.

Is it worth watching? Or has it become zombie already?

It still has some cool ideas, but it's just not as funny. The moment Rick and Morty became this corporate product made by a massive team of people with an inflated budget was the moment it became unrecognizable. The show is given too many resources, yet very few know what to do with it, least of all Dan Harmon.

Reminder both Beth and Jerry have threatened to punch Rick while he was vulnerable and posing no harm to anyone. (Jerry when Rick was hit with the stupid juice in the whirly dirly episode, beth after the space beth episode.) and they laughed when he flinched. both of them. both times. Beth is far more abusive than Rick is, and Jerry is only non-abusive because he is powerless. The moment he got power over Rick he abused it.

I also find it interesting, but then it just makes me feel bad when I remember we never get to hear from the actual writers anymore. Con panels for the show usually only ever include the voice cast and maybe one executive producer. I know Dan Harmon and Scott Marder still oversee the writing process, but each feels more like an Adult Swim spokesperson these days than someone down in the trenches with some genuinely cool production insight to share.

It's bad enough we don't get DVD commentary tracks, but now we lost Inside the Episode featurettes, too? What gives? I wanna hear from Albro Lundy and Heather Anne Campbell. I'll even take Nick Rutherford at this point...

Honestly the writing in rnm is pretty good most of the time. There's a lot of moving pieces in a given episode and it all has to come together.

The latest seasons aren't as bad as some "fans" claim, but they're still not as solid as the early seasons. The humor flows less naturally now that the writing staff is a revolving door of coworkers hitting deadlines rather than a consistent group of longtime friends with years of history together. Some of the main characters are also unrecognizable.

Loads of normies still gas up the show, asking when new episodes are coming to Netflix and the like. RaM ain't the new hotness anymore, but it still has a sizeable following and is too big to fail, even after the Roiland controversy shook things up for a bit.

While Smiling Friends is definitely viewed more favorably overall and has Adult Swim's core demographic more excited, it still won't ever grow quite as mainstream as a 22-minute sci-fi show that uses a familiar dysfunctional family sitcom format to ground it.

And that's okay. We don't NEED Smiling Friends to get to that level.
