You're right to be careful about it, but I can say anecdotally at least that I did know some families like that. One kid's family made him get rid of all his dragon toys because they were satanic. Another kid I knew, his mom didn't like him having anything to do with magic, which made playing Final Fantasy around her awkward (especially when he summoned Hades). I heard some older people worrying about Dungeons and Dragons being satanic. A lot of parents banned their kids rom shows like The Simpsons too, or TV in general.
There were strict parents and sometimes it was for religious reasons. It happened, but the thing is it was like 2 or 3 kids in your entire class rather than the norm for me. There were definitely preachers out there railing against things too. But you're right, they didn't have enough influence to stop things from being popular. At most they did stuff locally, like successfully getting Pokemon cards banned from some schools or stopping schools from celebrating Halloween. Things like that.
