Why is 1 relatively rare in western cartoons and media in general? You would think with the growing influence of anime they would be more common but despite what people think they’re pretty rare outside anime.

The only really like that is Callie Brigg. The other two don’t have the pointy chin anime face and their face shape is less human. Simplified but also the distinct face shape helps. Meanwhile most Kemono characters have that pointy anime face with a triangle nose which isn’t helped by the simplified face.

1 isn't popular in the West because it simply lacks any cultural content. In Japan it relies on folklore and the religion to give it some weight with Japanese people, but Westerners simply lack any cultural ties to the image. Meanwhile there are many examples of 2-7 throughout much of Western culture generally and also its component cultures for artists to draw from for direction and that the audience is already familiar with.

Of course, this is changing and is likely to continue to change as long as Japan continues to export a significant amount of cultural material to the West.

What is the point of Kemono when Anthros and ferals are objectively better for storytelling?

Kemono is cute but it's a very retarded and boring design and takes away from the seriousness of a story. Without counting Inuyasha how many times have you seen kemono outside of comedy or stories that don't take themselves too seriously and how many of those answers you managed to find are actually good stories?

There are only a handful kemono characters that actually look decent even coming from Japan which has a fuckhuge pool to draw from. The West produces far less cartoon than Japan does anime so I feel like you'd have to just fucking nail it right out of the gate, otherwise it's going to look bad like 99% of what even they're producing.

Not really. Japanese video games have always had a good mix of both like Breath of Fire, Shining Force, Suikoden and others.

Even recently you have games like Unicorn Overlord and Eiyuden where all the beast people have digitigrade legs, paws, snouts and fur (which is more than you can say for the Khajiit) and there is zero human with animal ears characters. In fact I can’t recall much recent games with kemonomimi characters that aren’t gacha games.

So it’s really just anime, and maybe manga, where kemonomimi designs are much more prevalent than anthro designs.

I mean that’s the nature of the artstyle. Anime humans are rarely drawn with noses and the overall style is much more simplified. I don’t think they’re being cowards, if you translate designs like Michiru into a different, more detailed artstyle she would probably look more animal-like. As is anthro designs done in anime style tend to have their animalness toned down because anime characters rarely have defined faces outside of the eyes and body details like fur get super simplified, which is also common in Western art styles.

I'm very excited about this exponential increase in real anthro content Japan has been on for the last 10 years. We already scratched greatness with Beastars but it got increasingly worse towards the end of the manga so it couldn't fully become this cultural turning point but this isn't 2017 anymore. Nowadays you even got nameless background eye candy anthro characters every 10 or so animes when 15 years ago they would have been kemono or some other fantasy or sci-fi race and stories entirely about a world of furries or taking place in one are becoming incresingly less of an oddity.

Just imagine what we will be seeing very soon from now by fusing the authentic western furry design and the passion the fandom has for it with the finesse, nuance and sophistication that Japan is capable of in their storytelling not to even mention the huge professional platform that creative freedom has over there. The west can't compete and that's why the furry fandom is entirely self-reliant and indie in nature in the purest meaning of the word.

We could be on the verge of a furry golden age where anthros aren't just relegated to children's stories in mainstream pro media but rather have their own adult dramas, horror, shonen, all of real good quality and meaning.

Imagine a brave new world of furry artistic freedom, not just yiff, but real quality storytelling.

Sure but even in a simplified artstyle Lola reads like a bunny because of the traits she has. Eastern designers tend to skew more towards human anatomy when it comes to anthros such as their faces being human faces but with snouts instead of a regular nose. Lola face shape and simplified snout reads more like a rabbit more so than anime face with a pointy chin and triangle nose. When combined with facial and body simplification most anime anthros tend to look much less animal-like but as I said that’s more on the artstyle than their design. The Michiru I posted has her drawn with defined fur, she has fur as shown in some shots, and while the face is debatable, the artstyle makes it impossible to tell what type of face Michiru has, it does show how it would differ with a defined snout.

Another example that was mentioned earlier is Catra. The normal artstyle makes her look furless but she’s meant to be covered in fur. If you draw her with defined fur she’s going to give more animalistic vibes than her drawn in-style.

Ninja High School has Azrael. (the blonde one) She's a Salusian skunk space princess. Benn Dunn constantly adds furries into his comics, where they really don't add much to the story. he recently released Kendra, and he still isn't a very good writer after all this time.

It doesn't really add much to the story to put ears and tails on female human characters. There's a lot less cartoons coming out than anime. So cartoons really have to sell merch and be appealing.
