That doesn't seem like the deepest source of conflict, I think you can admit. In fact, I think the kids had a lot of these low level hangups that got resolved when the story progressed (John and his dad's clowns, Jade and her colorful reminders, etc) because it's a coming of age story. Either the adult characters would have to backslide into their childhood pathologies (which ironically enough is what John's story in Candy is all about) or it'd have to be what drives a new generation of kids, which just feels like a rehash.

Not particularly, their role in my life was an extension of that time and place for both of us. Who they were before is a thing to realize existed, but actually being around them during that time wouldn't change that relationship, just start a new one.

In a way, that's actually more incestuous than clone siblings. They're just long-lost family, but this is actively rewriting parent-child dynamics with a new mutually teenaged paradigm.

There are so many stories about such banal stuff because they're relatable and really do cut deep. Now I admit I would love if they touched on more esoteric problems, like that they are elemental gods by the epilogues but even when coming to terms with the breadth of their existence it's those very banal beginnings that define how they interact with their aspects, a starting point as they transcend that shouldn't be forgotten or trivialized.
