I think Fionna is an interesting character that has some untapped potential. Not to disparage the current series, I get what it's doing, but it does feel like they're leaving a more typical adaptation of these ideas on the table.

Fionna is what happens when fandom writes Adventure Time. No attempt to play with the playful nature of the series and some of the network rules. Stuff like Midnight Gospel and even SU are Adventure Time without the network rules, and you get the same thing, only with more structure (SU) or even more inventiveness (MG). On one hand I can kind of see where you're coming from, Finn did defeat The Lich the first time, but when you take into account other events in the show, it totally makes sense that a situation like Stakes would be out of his wheelhouse.

Take for example an episode like Heat Signature from season 2. Finn and Jake almost died and could do nothing to stop it, actually not even Marceline could stop it. And even something like " it came from the nightosphere", Finn was only able to beat Abadeer cause he was caught off guard by Marceline's song. The show always rolled the dice on how useful Finn could be in a situation, and it was Marceline's story anyway.
