I think Aranea works because she acts as a 'we got Vriska at home' replacement for when Vriska is languishing as a ghost. Because Vriska is out of the game for a period, she can try and muscle in on the narrative turf of 'asshole who tries to micromanage the story' and fuck it up even more tremendously. Which kind of presages the retcon now that I think about it, it's basically saying 'Yeah Vriska sucks but if we kill her an even suckier Vriska shows up and makes things even worse'.
I guess Feferi could work because she has slightly more motivation to stop Lord English than your rando dreamghost (personally set up the bubbles, have a close connection to the horrorterrors).
Still, I think getting to meet alternate versions of Mindfang (who is the most important ancestor of Act 5) and the Condesce (who is the most important ancestor of Act 6) is worth a few skippable walkarounds about teen drama.

They have a good dynamic in the Act 5 chatlogs, John trusting Vriska does lead to him getting stronger via the windy thing and god-tiering, and Vriska realizing that she doesn't like it when John disapproves of her more destructive or cruel acts is about the closest anyone comes to non-forced/stupid character development in the comic.

It's a shame Hussie decided to throw basically all of that out during the timeskip and I do think Roxy and/or Terezi makes more sense for John with the way the main comic ends, but it's hard not reading the do you remem8er me logs and not finding it really cute and something that could work as a ship.
